Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Research and Prospect Management, the Associate Director of Research and Prospect Management contributes to the maintenance and improvement of the research and prospect management program by employing fundraising knowledge, independent judgment, strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity, combined with research and analytical techniques, to support the efficient movement of prospects through the development engagement cycle. Providing a comprehensive range of prospect research, analysis, data analytics and data mining to successfully facilitate the flow of prospects into and through the major donor pipeline, this position will work with the director and staff to fully utilize the resources of the department to provide maximum support to gift officers and senior staff. Principal duties include: * Actively support the identification and verification of new prospects identified through database screenings and other proactive resources, and is keenly involved in developing the processes and policies for these efforts; * Provides support for the fundraising activities of George Mason University by playing a lead role in the identification, qualification, and cultivation of major donor prospects and others as needed for university fundraising initiatives; * Plans, conducts, and oversees detailed research for university fundraisers and Advancement leadership using online databases, Internet resources, and in-house data; analyzing, interpreting and synthesizing biographical and financial information; and generating strategic reports and recommendations in support of university fundraising objectives and priorities; * Assist in creating benchmarks and goals for the prospect management program to ensure that the proper amount of turnover occurs in assignment portfolios and that portfolios are adequately supplied with new prospect names, then monitor and report on the progress of these goals; * Lead data analysis efforts and a proactive plan for identifying new and emerging prospects specific to the universitys current and future fundraising goals and priorities; * Collaborate with Advancement Operations and Information Technology teams to streamline database and reporting processes, procedures, and best practices; * Support fundraiser use of prospect management aspects of the database by regularly auditing prospect tracking and cultivation information, and be involved in planning and outreach to frontline fundraisers in support of moves management; * Provide staff training on the newest and most effective tools and resources as needed; * Remain informed of central issues in the development profession, maintain professional standards of research and conduct work in a manner that is ethical and sensitive to the needs of donors, advancement staff members, and the university; * Participate in ongoing professional development activities as relevant, to maintain and enhance skills and abilities and stay abreast of current trends and research techniques; * Provide general support to advancement staff and work on special projects as needed; and * Manage sensitive information and adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights and the Association of Prospect Research for Advancement (APRA) Statement of Ethics, Privacy and Prospect Research.
Required Qualifications: * Masters degree in journalism, communication, public relations--or any related field that emphasizes excellent writing, communications, and analytical skills--or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience; * Working knowledge of fundraising and proven experience producing profiles, analysis, and reporting to drive fundraising strategies; * Working knowledge of current trends in prospect management, prospect research, and fundraising campaigns; * Knowledge of screening strategies including but not limited to wealth screening, peer screening, in-house database mining, and engagement/affinity and model scoring; * Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, including thorough knowledge of online research resources, and present the resulting information in a clear and concise manner; * Attention to detail and the ability to be timely, thorough, accurate, and detail-oriented, while managing and prioritizing multiple projects; * Excellent analytical, inquisitive, and communication skills, including strong written and verbal skills; * Highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of expertise and seniority, and elicit cooperation without direct authority; * Exceptional computer skills that include Microsoft Office suite and various proprietary prospect identification and relational databases; * Ability to quickly learn and provide instruction in the use of various web-based tools; * Several years (a minimum of five years is preferred) of development research experience; and * Strong collaboration and inquiry skills with a commitment to a team-based work environment.
Preferred Qualifications: * Experience or demonstrated interest in leading or developing statistical analysis for data analytics and/or predictive modeling; * Experience in a higher education setting; and * Familiarity with the Ellucian Advance CRM and SAP BI software.
