Must have a background in transportation and land use planning, multi-modal planning (e.g., bicycles, pedestrians, transit), and a familiarity with complete streets and/or traffic operations. Work will include a wide range of transportation planning projects, including long range multi modal transportation planning, sub-area and corridor studies, and land use studies. Fairfax County faces significant transportation challenges and is seeking innovative solutions, transitioning away from single occupant vehicles as the primary means of transportation.

Duties include:
  • Assisting with or managing county transportation studies;
  • Managing county participation in corridor and facility-level transportation feasibility studies;
  • Evaluating impacts of proposed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan;
  • Participating in and conducting public outreach efforts;
  • Giving presentations to, and coordinating with, elected officials, citizen groups and staff from partnering agencies.

Position may be underfilled as a Transportation Planner I; the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of experience related to transportation planning.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in planning or related field. Background in transportation and land use planning, multi modal planning, including bicycles, pedestrians and/or transit, familiarity with context sensitive solutions and complete streets, and traffic operations. Experience in: preparing long range transportation plans, evaluating transportation impacts of development proposals, GIS, travel demand analysis, Sketch-up or other rendering software program, giving presentations, community outreach, excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to work on teams and/or in a group. The ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities which accurately reflect the importance of the job, accomplish departmental goals and objectives. The candidate should have the ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. This position requires one to be able to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, type on a keyboard, and lift up to 25 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

This vacancy will be underfilled at the level of Transportation Planner I (Grade S21, $49,623 - $82,704).
