Sentara Heart Hospital is seeking experienced RN's to work with our Cardiac Surgical Acute Care Unit. This position is located in Norfolk, VA and is a full-time DAY shift.

Sentara Heart Hospital, on the Sentara Norfolk General campus, offers the Hampton Roads region's only heart transplant program, including total artificial hearts and ventricular assist devices as bridges to transplant and permanent therapy. In 2016, Sentara Heart has introduced two newly-approved cardiac technologies; the world's smallest pacemaker and the world's first dissolvable heart stent. The region's first and only dedicated heart hospital is unlike any facility within hundreds of miles. Sentara Heart Hospital has all-private rooms, including 112 inpatient beds, 62 pre/post procedural rooms for patients undergoing interventional cardiac procedures and several outpatient cardiac clinics.

Unit Summary:
In response to increasing surgical volumes and expanding therapy options within the Cardiac Surgery and Structural heart program, a new care delivery model is being implemented within the Sentara Heart Hospital. Cardiac Surgery Acute Care unit is a 12 bed unit on the 4th floor of the Heart Hospital. This unit will allow the team to admit patients who no longer require or meet critical care criteria, but are more acute than a typical intermediate care patient. The CSACU was created to meet that particular need for patient flow, while still maintaining the highest of patient care and safety standards. Our patient ratio will be up to 2 patients per nurse. CSACU has been equipped with hardwire telemetry monitoring in addition to a central monitoring station to prepare for this transition of care.

The CSACU will be able to care for patients who may require:
  • High flow oxygen or BiPap support
  • Management and titration of up to 2 vasopressors (Levohped and Vasopressin)
  • Management and titration of up to 2 anti-hypertensives (Nitroglycerin and Cardene
  • Management and monitoring of arterial and CVP pressure lines.

The Registered Nursing (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence- based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.

New Hire Education Requirement: All new RN's who do not have their BSN will be required to sign a BSN Agreement committing to enrollment in an accredited RN to BSN program within 24 months of hire and successfully obtaining their BSN within 5 years of hire. BSN or MSN preferred. Meets and maintains any requirements defined by specific specialty; Critical Care/IMCU ACLS within 1 year of hire; Emergency Care - ACLS & PALS or ENPC within 1 year of hire; Oncology Care ONS/ONCC or Sentara approved course Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider Card within 6 months of hire. Women's Care - Perinatal departments; NRP within 6 months of hire. Inpatient Pediatrics. PALS within 6 months of hire. All Direct Care RN's required to have BLS within 90 days of hire.
