The media relations assistant position for the Office of News and Public Information provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a fast-paced public relations department that works with top-tier news outlets on a daily basis.  The media relations assistant will serve as the front line of communication with journalists and the public, as well as play an integral role on the public affairs team.


Job Summary:


The Media Assistant will be responsible for providing administrative and technical support to the news office, including answering reporters' inquiries, working closely with media officers to disseminate material to journalists, and coordinating social and digital media. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in news and communication related to public policy, especially in the fields of science, technology, and health.


Other duties include: Assisting media officers with planning of news conferences and other media events, especially handling logistical arrangements. Maintaining regular database of reporter contacts. Post news releases and other information to websites and social media. Managing and collection of news clips. Perform other tasks as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Good customer service skills. Database management and digital dissemination skills. Ability to solve problems through selection and application of commonly used rules, procedures, and precedents. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop effective working relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments.  Bachelor's degree in related field and one year of related experience desired. Desired qualifications include the following: Understanding of communications, news, public relations, and social media.
