Operator II, Engineering Equipment/CDL
The Authority is seeking a highly motivated Operator II, Engineering Equipment/CDL.Operates heavy duty gasoline or diesel powered engineering or construction equipment that may include: backhoe, hoe ram, tractor with a front end loader, cranes, dump trucks, and equipment with attachments such as pile drivers, drag buckets, backfill tampers, clam shells, paving breakers, etc. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: . Operates heavy duty tractor with a hydraulically operated front-end loader; cranes; backhoes, dump trucks, street sweepers; equipment with attachments such as pile drivers, drag buckets, backfill tampers, clam shells, paving breakers; etc. . Operates front end loader to transfer earth, broken pavement, etc., from ground level to truck or to backfill excavation. Loads sand, salt, gavel, etc. Operates loader in connection to snow removal program. . Operates backhoe to excavate the ground for repair, replacement and maintenance activities associated with mains, laterals, fire hydrants, valves, catch basins manholes, etc to facilitate repair and service work. . Operates construction equipment to lift, set and install materials, such as pipes, plates, fire hydrants, valves, catch basins, manholes, fittings, etc. . Installs and extracts sheeting or bearing piling. . Ensures that terrain is capable of supporting the weight of engineering and construction equipment, and determines where outriggers are needed. . Exercises extreme caution to avoid any damages to underground utility lines, overhead wires, and nearby properties. . When not operating equipment, provides manual work assistance to the crew in the completion of the work. Assists crews in clean up. Directs traffic when needed. . Performs minor maintenance on equipment. This includes performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections and taking corrective actions. Performs routine maintenance such as lubrication, securing hydraulic or mechanical connections, cleaning and spot painting equipment, and replenishing fuel. . Assists mechanics diagnosing the problems in making major repairs to equipment. Assists mechanics who make repairs to equipment; performs general routine maintenance on equipment. . Provides technical guidance to less experienced operators. . Prepares daily and special reports, including accident and incident reports. Equipment report must properly identify any operational and mechanical problems and other conditions. Complies with applicable safety rules and regulations. . Responsible for safe operation and transport of equipment. . Driver tractors and 10 wheel dump trucks. . Identifies issues related to coordination with other utilities and municipal service providers. . Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the supervisor. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:. High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) and five (5) years of experience that involves the operation of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction. . Must possess and maintain current a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License, a Commercial Driver's License - Class A with air brake endorsement ; and DC Operating Engineer's Licenses Class 7B and Class 7D. . Complete knowledge of all heavy equipment. Thorough knowledge of the city streets and roads to be able to respond to emergency calls in the shortest period of time and avoid heavy traffic. Ability to read maps in order to determine safe location to dig in working with municipal service providers in determining where to dig between gas/water and electric lines. . Knowledge of surface and subsurface soil conditions and the ability to use alternate approaches to meet changing conditions. . Knowledge of material weighs and equipment lifting capabilities and the ability to safely use equipment to maximum capacity. Requires an exceptional degree of visual and physical coordination. Must be able to lift 50 lbs and push or pull up to 100 pounds. . Ability to safely operate construction equipment and skills in the use of the different sets of controls and attachments. . Skills to use powered equipment to effectively perform excavation and surface grading. . Subject to indoor and/or outdoor environmental conditions that include exposure to extreme cold and/or hot temperatures, and hazards in excavations, and roadways. . Subject to noise and vibration; and hazards from a variety of physical conditions such as working close to moving mechanical parts or electric current, or exposure to high heat or chemicals or falling, drowning, infection, rodents, and insects. . Subject to atmospheric conditions that require wearing personal protective equipment and may affect the respirator system or skin such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, chemicals, sewage, activated sludge, lubricants, and other cutting fluids.
