Job Description:Performs technical laboratory procedures with high degree of accuracy and efficiency. * Operates laboratory equipment and performs testing according to established procedure/protocol. * Performs scheduled maintenance on laboratory instrumentation. * Recognizes, troubleshoots, and documents equipment problems, contacting service when appropriate. * Responds appropriately to panic values by notifying the appropriate caregiver. * Produces accurate and timely laboratory test results. * Evaluates laboratory test results according to age and/or diagnosis. * Utilizes laboratory equipment and supplies/consumables with minimal waste. * Reviews laboratory reports in the absence of Lead Technologist; notifies Manager, Laboratory Services of problems/ concerns. * Assists in research and evaluation of procedures at the direction of the Lead Technologist. * Trains new personnel in the operation of laboratory instrumentation and testing procedures. * Evaluates quality control results within established parameters. * Maintains quality control records by completing corrective action forms, logging quality control values, etc. * Corrects detected problems, documenting corrective action taken. Education & Experience: * Successful completion of the following is required: 1. Bachelor's degree in medical technology or one of the biological or chemical sciences from an accredited institution 2. Clinical Laboratory experience with a passing score in the US Public Health Service proficiency examination for Clinical Laboratory Technologists. * MT, MLT or HT certification by ASCP plus 2 years of experience in a high complexity laboratory. Bachelor's degree, along with any suitable combination of training or experience is acceptable. Licensure & Certification : * See Education and Experience. Physical Demands: Works in a clean, well-lighted environment. Requires walking, standing and ascending/descending stairs approximately 70% of the time. Requires carrying supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.; approximately 40% of the time. Requires bending and reaching approximately 40% of the time; lifting and pushing/pulling supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. approximately 25% of the time. Requires substantial visual acuity and manual dexterity to handle specimens. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and/or blood and body substances and hazardous materials requiring the observance of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices.
