About this role: You will be developing and managing custom integration solutions in Java that bring together existing systems, helping the Smithsonian automate the process of connecting its holdings with users and applications inside and outside the Smithsonian. You will be able to apply your expertise to many interesting technical problems while working with a team of developers, administrators, and subject matter experts. * Design and develop new web-based applications for use by the general public to access SI's extensive and disparate collection of records * Provide suggested architecture and design for these new applications * Occasionally interact with internal end-customers of these new applications * Monitor the production status of existing applications and provide production support, as needed * Understand the code-base of existing applications and suggest improvements, fix bugs, and add new features, as needed * Advance the overall architectural agenda of OCIO in its pursuit of providing the next generation of applications for use across SI. Required Skills The following skills are valued: * Extensive expertise in designing and developing both the client and server-side of web-based applications * Some expertise with basic front-end technologies, specifically HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript (jQuery experience is a plus) * Some expertise with XML technologies, including XPath, XQuery, XSLT * Some expertise with Java XML technologies, including JAXB and StAX * Some expertise with designing production-capable environments, including application performance tuning, index tuning, server clustering, and load balancing * Familiarity with typical contemporary Java development environments, including SVN, Eclipse or Netbeans, and ant * Familiarity with UNIX, including basic shell commands and basic Bash scripting The following skills are desired: * Experience with the Spring framework, in particular Spring IoC and Spring MVC * Experience with Apache Solr, including installing, data importing, schema design, and administering * Familiarity with contemporary project management tools, including Jira and Confluence * Familiarity with Drupal and PHP Required Experience A minimum of 7 Years relevent experience Job Location Washington, DC
