Public Affairs Internship
The Public Affairs Intern will be an integral part of the public affairs team at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He/she will assist with high-profile programs, media relations and daily operations in a fast-paced public affairs department. Interns have flexibility to create and execute independent projects based on their interests and will include:
- 11 Most: Assist with media lists, outreach efforts, and coordination among different team members to successfully launch the 2017 11 Most Endangered Places List
- Media Reporting: Create media reports for Treasure launches and other media events
- Press Document Creation and Distribution: Draft press releases, key messages, and press lists
- Diversity Outreach: Develop a diverse audience. From a media perspective, this means reaching out to a wide variety of media outlets that focus on topics of diversity and cater to diverse audiences
- National Treasures Support: Create media lists for launches and calculate the reach of these efforts by tracking media placements and impressions. Will also work with site managers to update the specific National Treasure pages on SavingPlaces.org.
- Conference Promotion: Prepare for promotion of Chicago PastForward Conference focused on cities and Re-urbanism themes; create media lists and research potential outreach efforts to be used in the fall.
- Admin: Answer the PA phone line, monitor the email@example.com inbox, and send all media inquiries out to the team.
National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $2,000 to help offset expenses. Dates of the summer project range from early June - late August, but may be flexible
- Perform all duties with the aim of helping to achieve National Trust strategic goals, including engaging the public, reaching more diverse communities and constituents, and building and highlighting organizational partnerships;
- Build editorial calendar and track media opportunities;
- Help implement media strategy, including pitching, for high-profile National Trust programs, events and initiatives;
- Draft press releases, media advisories and other press materials;
- Assist with management of online Press Center;
- Build strategic media lists;
- Maintain and edit digital assets;
- Administrative tasks as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN
This internship will provide great educational value to anyone looking to improve their writing skills, time management skills, project management skills, media relations skills etc. They will learn how to use a database to compile media lists, and will also be able to practice pitching stories to reporters, all while being part of the Public Affairs team. Learning how to work on a team will be a major focus of this internship.
- Experience or demonstrated interest working in communications, public affairs, historic preservation, or related field; experience marketing to and engaging culturally diverse audiences, constituents and partners a plus;
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills; excellent writing, editing, and research skills required;
- Familiarity with content management systems, Photoshop and FTP desirable.
- Entrepreneurial and creative.
- Basic analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
- Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English. Bi-lingual language skills a plus.
- Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Bachelor's level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in related subject matter preferred, including public relations, journalism, historic preservation, museum studies, etc.
- Regular and reliable attendance required.
