Latino Heritage Editorial Internship
The editorial intern will focus specifically on producing research that identifies historic places that have connections to Hispanic- and Latino-American heritage and culture for editorial coverage on[[http:SavingPlaces.org|SavingPlaces.org]], in Preservation magazine, and through other National Trust channels. They will produce this research with a focus on identifying stories for members of the editorial team to report and write about. The editorial intern will also be given the opportunity to write and report on a number of these stories on their own.
National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $1,000 per month to help offset expenses. Preferred dates for this internship are June 5 - August 31, but may be flexible.
Duties include editorial research, reporting, photo research, photo editing, story building, writing, use of the National Trust's content management system, and some administrative tasks.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN
The intern will gain experience under the mentorship of respected editorial professionals in an educational setting at one of the nation's leading arts & cultural and nonprofit advocacy organizations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Washington Office internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.
Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:
- The editorial process
- Story pitching
- Photo research
- Photo editing
- Using the National Trust's content management system
- Operating in a professional setting at a leading national nonprofit organization
At the end of the project the intern will have produced a significant body of research, as well as a number of editorial clips, that can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits.
- Undergraduate degree or focus in journalism, history, English, philosophy, religion, language, or related liberal arts disciplines.
- Availability for 28-hour (4-day) work week in the Washington, D.C, office.
- Demonstrated writing ability and experience a must (three published clips are required with application.)
- Strong background in research and story development.
- Strong knowledge of AP Style and grammar.
- Demonstrated interest in subject matter.
- Basic analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
- Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English. Bi-lingual language skills (English/Spanish) a plus.
- Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners, especially Latino or Hispanic communities, strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word and Excel. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and content management systems a plus.
- Bachelor's level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in history, English, philosophy, religion, language, or related liberal arts disciplines preferred.
