PROJECT SUMMARY

An array of projects to further the goals and efficacy of the National Trust's Donor Relations and Philanthropic Planning teams as they relate to stewardship and cultivation of donors including the National Trust Council, the organization's premier donor recognition society and Legacy Circle members. Assignments may include researching best practices in donor travel programs and planned giving stewardship and compiling reports encapsulating findings; strategizing and compiling internal events protocol and producing corresponding documents; building events metrics model and researching past events data; researching cities for upcoming Council gatherings; co-managing a small-to-medium sized donor event; and contributing to the National Trust Council newsletter and other written trip materials. Exact role may be tailored to best utilize the selected intern's strengths and professional interests.

National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.

For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $2,000 to help offset expenses. Dates of the summer internship program are June 5 - July 28, but may be flexible for some projects.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE

  • Capturing and institutionalizing strategy and protocols:
    • Updating internal events protocol
    • Updating Cultivation Strategy Memo form
    • Updating invitation request form
    • Creating small events and donor-led toolkits (invitation examples, sample budget, program, event memo, timeline outline, catering staff per event/per table, etc.) for both internal and external audiences
  • Enhancing Event Metrics
    • Researching and compiling donor event metrics by working through netFORUM (with Data Analytics & Operations team)
    • Updating historical information (budgets, attendance, outcomes, etc.)
    • Streamlining process for future tracking with sample goals, budgets, etc.
  • Co-managing a small-to-medium sized donor event
  • Building upon existing research re: industry standards for donor appreciation programs
    • Initiating conversations with peer organizations that have donor travel programs
    • Compiling report to capture best practices and recommendations
  • Contributing to marketing products and materials for the NTC and Legacy Circle, including writing copy for newsletters, internal and external, marketing brochures, etc.
  • Project management of the Philanthropic Giving Website, including compiling and crafting content.
  • Assisting with NTC weekend prep - writing/editing, logistics *depending on internship timeframe.
    • Researching cities selected for 2018 NTC trip locations
    • Drafting NTC save the date communications
    • Drafting staff itineraries

EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN

The intern will gain hands-on experience under the mentorship of respected preservation and development professionals, in an educational setting at one of the nation's leading arts & cultural non-profit advocacy organizations - the National Trust for Historic Preservation - and have extensive exposure to donor and fundraising strategy, protocol and management. The intern will interact with staff across the Philanthropy department, Advancement division and, at times, with senior leadership, providing a unique opportunity to experience organizational decision making and operations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Washington Office internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.

Additionally, meetings/decisions they'd witness as part of the Donor Relations team:

  • Event/National Trust Council strategy and planning meetings with senior and executive leadership;
  • Donor Relations team meetings;
  • Philanthropic Planning meetings;
  • Philanthropy and Advancement team meetings;
  • And local donor events.

Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:

  • Overall philanthropic giving levels and moves management;
  • Donor Relations and Philanthropic Planning Strategy and Implementation;
  • Writing for a donor audience;
  • Preliminary understanding of CRM functioning;
  • Events Planning and Management;
  • And metric research, development and interpretation.

At the end of the project the intern will have produced research findings on other donor travel programs; internal events protocol outlines and corresponding documentation; events metrics model and past events data; research on cities for upcoming Council gatherings; and a successfully planned and executed event (pending event schedule), which can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits. Exact parameters and expectations for this internship may be tailored to fit the strengths and interests of the selected candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 4-5 days per week (21-35 hours weekly) preferred, with flexibility to attend potential after hours events. Time commitment may vary according to the intern's arrangements and request.
  • Basic analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word and Excel. Familiarity with other software, including CRM systems, Adobe Suite, PowerPoint and Mailchimp a plus.
  • Bachelor's level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in Non-profit Fundraising, Public or Non-Profit Management, Event and Conference Management, Communications and/or Donor Stewardship preferred.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
