GIS Internship - Rosenwald Schools Mapping Project
The National Trust for Historic Preservation seeks a GIS intern. This internship is an opportunity for a college or graduate student to work one-on-one with the National Trust's GIS Analyst in Washington, DC, along with other Preservation Division staff. The intern will work primarily on the Rosenwald Schools Mapping project, a NPS-funded program to aggregate disparate cultural resource information on Rosenwald Schools into a geodatabase, but may assist on the National Trust's other GIS-related programs.
About Rosenwald Schools: During the period of segregation in education, Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears Roebuck, built state-of-the art schools for African- American children across the South, which have been dubbed Rosenwald Schools. The effort has been called the most important initiatives to advance black education in the early 20th century. Despite the schools' historical significance, only a small percentage of Americans are familiar with the structures and their impact on our nation's history. While some schools are being preserved for community use, lack of resources and neglect still threaten many others. Building the capacity of a network of preservationists working to identify, document and preserve these historic resources has been a National Treasures project of the National Trust for many years.
National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $3,000 to help offset expenses. Ideal dates for this internship are May 15 through July 7, but are flexible and may be able accommodate starting out part time.
The GIS intern will assist the GIS Analyst with:
•researching and testing best practices for data transfer standards;
•digitizing data from electronic or paper maps and images;
• developing and organizing spatial data into geodatabases;
• running spatial analyses;
• creating print maps;
• creating ArcGIS Online web applications.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN
The intern will gain experience under the mentorship of respected GIS and preservation professionals, in an educational setting at one of the nation's leading arts & cultural and non-profit advocacy organizations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Washington Office internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.
Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:
• spatial data transfer standards;
• geodatabase creation and management;
• spatial analytics;
• web GIS/ArcGIS Online web applications;
At the end of the project the intern will have produced a geodatabase, as well as a set of print and web map applications, which can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits.
•Knowledge and experience using Esri products, especially ArcMap 10.x.
•Familiarity or strong interest in web GIS applications.
•Knowledge of geodatabases, spatial analysis, and cartography.
•Experience working with Model Builder and/or arcpy preferred.
•Familiarity with metadata standards preferred.
•Familiarity with relational databases preferred.
•Basic analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
•Excellent attention to detail.
•Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
•Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion
•Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment
•Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English. Bi-lingual language skills a plus.
•Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus. Interest in or connections to Rosenwald Schools, African American history, or related topics a plus.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
•Bachelor's level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in related subject matter (geography, urban spatial analytics, historic preservation, African American History) preferred.
