Job Type: Full-Time Location: 2110 Washington Blvd., Arlington, VA 22204, Virginia       Note: This is a full time position, 40 hours a week, 12 months a year.

The employee is one of four nursing supervisors in the Arlington County School Health Bureau, which is part of the Arlington, VA Department of Human Service's Public Health Division. S/He is an integral part of the School Health Leadership Team, along with the Bureau Chief and School Health Physician, and works on  broad issues affecting the health of students and families.

The School Health Bureau provides services to Arlington Public Schools and the community, focusing on direct services to students, health education and promotion, the prevention of communicable disease, and other measures designed to remove or reduce health-related barriers to learning.

Specific duties include:
  • Daily supervision of a team of PHNs and school-based clinic aides (approximately 11 - 15 employees), including hiring, orientation, performance assessment, staff development, team-building, etc.
  • Regular interaction with school principals, staff and parents to ensure coordinated school-based health
  • Active participation on the School Health Leadership Team to maintain and improve the School Health Program
  • Leadership of selected activities within the Bureau (examples of existing activities include Development of improved diabetes modules and training; more effective use of data information systems; management of staffing for summer school; oversight of school-based vaccination activities, etc.)
  • Regular reporting on team activities, including QA, medication administration, weekly and monthly reports, etc.
  • Working with other units within the health department on communicable disease prevention and outbreaks and other health issues.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Nursing plus considerable experience as a Registered Nurse in general nursing, or community/public health nursing which included program administration or coordination of the work of others.

Substitution: Additional directly related qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable:
  • School health experience or clinical experience in pediatrics, particularly in a community setting;
  • Supervisory experience; and/or
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health or a related field.

  •  Special Requirements:
    1. Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a R.N. from the Commonwealth of Virginia or from the state in which the applicant resides (based on Compact Agreement). If eligible, candidate will be allowed 60 days to obtain license in Virginia.
    2. Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence, or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
    3. A pre-employment background check will be conducted on candidates selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

     Additional Information: Employee is based at 2100 Washington Blvd. and travels throughout the County to provide onsite supervision at the schools and some community sites.

    Work hours: 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
