The George Mason University College of Education and Human Development invites applications for a new, full-time term (non-tenure track) instructional faculty position in the Division of Special Education and Disability Research to begin Fall 2017, as an American Sign Language Term Instructor/Assistant Professor. The American Sign Language (ASL) program is an approved foreign language core sequence of courses for undergraduate students that can also be used as an elective sequence in the Masters of Special Education degree program.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: teaching all levels of ASL undergraduate and graduate-level courses during the day and in the evening, leading curriculum activities to expand program options, supporting adjunct faculty, facilitating the development of an ASL lab, and assessing students for placement in the program sequence. The teaching load will be 4 courses in both the Fall and Spring semesters, with the option to add courses under separate contract for the Summer. The individual in this position will be the “professor-in-charge” of the ASL program.

Required Qualifications: * Earned masters degree in ASL or a related field, with preference given to those having an earned doctorate or explicit credentials in ASL, Deaf studies, Deaf education, or ASL interpretation (e.g., ASLTA, RID, CDE, CE/CT, or NIC). Those with a doctoral-level credential are eligible for appointment at the assistant professor rank; * Must demonstrate outstanding potential and versatility in teaching, with native or near-native proficiency in ASL so as to converse fluently in high-level professional and academic conversation; and * Must have an understanding of and extensive background in Deaf culture and familiarity with current research in ASL and Deaf culture.

Preferred Qualifications: * Experience in diverse settings and experience teaching ASL at the post-secondary level.
