Responsibilities: The University Life/Residence Life Coordinator for Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation is a 12-month, live-in, professional staff member responsible for the administration and management of the residential facility at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) property, which houses the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC). The primary responsibility of this position is working with the Smithsonian Mason partnership to ensure a safe and comfortable environment that supports both the academic mission of the university and the program. This position oversees the Housing Student Support staff and desk assistants at SMSC. In addition, this position is also responsible for working collaboratively with the Smithsonian-Mason stakeholders and SMSC faculty, by providing student development, and creating and maintaining critical systems that support student operations of the housing facility in Front Royal, Va.

A University Life/Residence Life Coordinator at George Mason University fulfills five primary areas within the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Responsibilities fall into the categories of Staff Supervision, Community Development and Programming, Departmental Responsibilities, Student Development, and Administrative Duties to include, but not limited to: * Maintain a visible presence in SMSC Residence Hall as a live-in professional; * Meet with SMSC student staff and students as needed and requested; * Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents, faculty, Smithsonian personnel, National Zoo Police (NZP), and other on-site staff to ensure a safe, comfortable living learning community; * Maintain flexible work hours based on facility use which are posted and visible in the residential area office to best serve students. Engage in positive, professional interactions with students after business hours--as needed--for programming, community development and emergency response needs; * Assist in the coordination of housekeeping and maintenance to provide a clean, safe residential facility for students in relation to SMSC. These staff will be responsible for maintaining not only the residential common areas, but the dining areas and student lounge areas; * Directly supervise and train the student staff at SMSC to handle hall programming, and student community support. Conduct weekly meetings, evaluations and leadership development with the SMSC Resident Advisors (RAs); * Assist with the supervision of Beacon Hall staff and duties in the absence of the Assistant Director Residential University Life, Science and Technology; * Assist with training of SMSC student staff; * Oversee programming and community development activities of SMSC student staff; * Establish and oversee on-call duty rotation with SMSC RAs to ensure building coverage on nights and weekends; * Participate in on-call rotation with the Assistant Director Residential University Life, Science and Technology; * Actively support the Living Learning Community (LLCs) and its mission and vision by working with the Director of LLC Development and appropriate faculty; * Coordinate the move-in and move-out processes for students. Work with Mason Housing staff to ensure prompt and effective customer service; * Oversee the room assignment process as it relates to students by working closely with the Associate Director of Housing Services and other appropriate Mason staff; * Maintain staff compliance with established Residence Life and university policies, including policies as they relate to the Smithsonian Institution and SCBI; * Promote and develop management procedures and practices that preserve and enhance the facilities by conducting equipment and building inventories on a regular basis; * Offer recommendations to appropriate personnel for the purchase of furnishings and equipment, the improvement of housekeeping services, preventative maintenance, vandalism programs and safety measures; * Conduct regular building tours. Investigate reported damages and implement the damage billing process--as necessary--and communicate to appropriate personnel; * Coordinate and implement the distribution of keys and/or access cards for SMSC students. Communicate related policies to both staff and residents. Administer the RS2 Access system in collaboration with Fairfax campus administrators; * In conjunction with the Office of Environmental Health Safety and designated Smithsonian Institute personnel, assist in the execution of fire drills and health and safety inspections; * Collaborate with dining staff to communicate student dietary concerns and program support; * Assist in the conduction of room inspections prior to student arrival. Maintain Room Condition Reports (RCRs) for each space to assist in inventory and damage control; * Coordinate with the Emergency Operations Team (EOT) with Mason and Smithsonian constituents to manage weather-related issues and other emergency situations; * Maintain, edit and distribute SMSC Student Resource Manual for all incoming SMSC students by working closely with faculty and Mason constituents; * Coordinate the issuance of Mason identifications for students by working directly with the Mason Card Office; * Collaborate with faculty on hall programming to offer students a cocurricular compliment to coursework; * Seek to establish student activities programming commensurate with other Mason campuses; * Coordinate recruitment and selection of SMSC Residence Life student staff at SMSC. Work with Office of Housing and Residence Life staff to execute hiring and termination paperwork; * Advise students regarding pertinent information relating to the residence hall and SMSC as needed; and * Provide on-call support to SMSC student staff while students are in the residence hall.

Departmental Responsibilities: * Engage in positive, professional interactions with students as needed for programming, community development, and emergency response needs; * In addition to recruiting and supervising RAs, the incumbent will oversee and participate in the on-call rotation with the Resident Assistants; and * Maintain a visible presence in the Residence Hall as a live-in professional.

University Life Responsibilities: * Advise, recommend and coordinate access to University Life resources for SMSC students; and * Plan and implement SMSC student orientation with the collaboration of faculty, SCBI staff, and Mason stakeholders.

Other Duties: * Coordinate Health and Safety checks; * Collaborate with faculty, Smithsonian personnel and other stakeholders to ensure a positive and educational experience for students; and * Act as essential personnel in times of emergency and at critical times.

Required Qualifications: The ideal candidates will possess the following minimum qualifications: Masters degree (applicants with a combination of education, training and residence life experience which may be equated to an advanced degree may be also be considered); demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, build relationships and implement processes; and a proven ability in establishing successful new programs or partnerships.

Preferred Qualifications: Significant experience working in student development and/or customer service in a residence life/residential setting; basic working knowledge of Spanish--proficiency in multiple languages is a plus; strong administrative and computer skills; and experience supervising student and/or graduate staff.
