Position Summary

The Communications Coordinator is a key member of the Development team, providing support for a wide range of external communications activities focusing on increasing ACT donor and general public awareness of ACT’s efforts. The Coordinator is primarily responsible for both implementing ACT’s communications strategy and serving as project coordinator for communications initiatives. In addition, this position is responsible for producing creative and dynamic content in coordination with country office and program staff and managing ACT’s social media presence including its website.  Finally, the Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing internal communications initiatives, coordinating with local communications staff to ensure regular, timely and relevant flow of information throughout the organization in order to support improved employee engagement.

Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Communications Coordinator include but are not limited to the following:

Coordination of ACT Communications Strategy

  • Determining communications project priorities and providing input on how to effectively and efficiently allocate financial and human resources
  • Serving as liaison with country office communications staff and coordinating external communications initiatives with program offices
  • Providing support for the effective execution of local and sub-regional dissemination strategies based on the different national realities
  • Developing and coordinating communications calendar (including social media), ensuring a balance in content types and across country programs
  • Press strategies and outreach: seeking media partners to publish ACT content and develop appropriate story pitches for those media outlets
  • Monitoring dissemination outcomes and media presence to prepare reports on management and results
  • Assisting in coordinating production for communications print initiatives, including the annual report, brochures, mail pieces and other collateral materials

Coordination of ACT Internal Communications Initiatives

  • Implement and manage a comprehensive and coordinated internal communication strategy that supports the organization’s goals and promotes ACT identity within staff
  • Continuous improvement of core internal communication channels and establishment of new channels using a full range of technology tools to ensure local and overseas staff is kept informed
  • Development of a network of internal communication champions within each office to stimulate content and provide feedback for internal communication activity
  • Working closely with country program communications staff and other departments to develop plans to communicate specific initiatives within a structured and coherent framework
  • Be responsible for all copywriting activity relating to internal communication
  • Develop procedures and policies for branding/usage of ACT promotional materials and other printed items (t-shirt, backpacks, jackets, etc.) used by staff in the field and other sites      

Content Generation and Dissemination

  • Establishing and maintaining ties with subregional reporters and media
  • Providing rapid response to requests from the media
  • Writing and editing press material (pamphlets, opinion articles, press releases, and mailing list content)
  • In coordination with HQ and country program staff, writing content for website (project descriptions, story map text, and online proposals) and social media presence
  • Interviewing technical and field staff after returning from trips to develop field-related content
  • In coordination with the Development Coordinator, planning and generating quarterly e-newsletter and other electronic distributions

Coordination of Social Media

  • Managing both ACT’s and the ACT president’s social media accounts for major content releases
  • Coordinating emails sent to high-visibility partners for social media promotion
  • Seeking new high-visibility partners to promote ACT content on social media
  • Writing catchy and accessible captions
  • Ensuring proper hashtags, Facebook tags, and images on posts
  • Responding to messages on social media

Website

  • Serving as front-end manager of the ACT website
  • Managing content to be published on the website

Management and Curation of Audiovisual Content

  • Organizing and updating ACT’s audiovisual library and photographic archives
  • Overseeing transfer of photo and video content from country program and HQ staff returning from the field (with appropriate captions)

 

Required Education And Experience

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of basic HTML/CSS and content management platforms such as WordPress
  • Aptitude with basic social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite) and comfort level with learning web-based applications (e.g., newsletter distribution)
  • Experience with media content creation
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Experience, Education and Language Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications-related field and three to five years of communications or marketing experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
  • Native-level English speaker
  • Minimum conversational ability in Spanish, ability to read Spanish easily; Portuguese and/or Dutch a plus

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
