Works in a collaborative environment providing discharge planning and intensive case management services to seriously mentally ill and co-occurring adults that are involved with the criminal justice system (court services, attorneys, probation and parole) as well as the mental health system. Assesses, referrs, and links incarcerated and forensically hospitalized individuals to community based services and resources. Provides community outreach services to seriously mentally ill adults that have difficulty engaging in services will be an essential function of this position. Position will be based at the Woodburn Center in Annandale, VA.

Note: Position may be underfilled as a Behavioral Health Clinician in Residence; the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.

Illustrative Duties
  • Performs complex evaluations and makes independent diagnoses using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders;
  • Provides individual, family and group treatment;
  • Maintains a diverse caseload of clients with acute, chronic mental illness;
  • Approves and/or implements therapeutic treatment plans;
  • Conducts intensive clinical interventions;
  • Consults with professionals on a variety of problems including delivery of needed services for clinically complex cases;
  • Provides liaison to community agencies to facilitate communication and service provision for clients requiring multiple services;
  • Monitors and analyzes the impact of psychotropic medication on client's functioning and mental status;
  • Provides risk assessments for dangerousness to self and others;
  • Provides crisis stabilization and crisis management.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, theories, and methods of the psychological and social development of the individual;
  • Thorough knowledge of intake procedures, social history development, and interviewing techniques;
  • Thorough knowledge of major schools of treatment of emotionally and socially disturbed individuals;
  • Knowledge of psychiatric, psychological, and/or sociological terminology and concepts;
  • Ability to conduct mental health assessments and apply treatment approaches/modalities;
  • Ability to formulate diagnoses for clients with acute, chronic, severe mental illness;
  • Ability to diagnostically interpret data obtained from psychological test results, social histories, and interviews;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, public and private sector organizations, community groups, and the general public;
  • Ability to monitor and analyze the impact of psychotropic medications;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Employment Standards

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Graduation from an accredited college with a master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or nursing; plus two years of clinical experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a current license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia in one of the following: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist. A valid motor vehicle driver's license with fewer than six demerit points (or equivalent in another state) at time of appointment and maintained throughout employment with CSB.

UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
Behavioral Health Clinician in residence, Grade S24 ($57,165 - $95,276 annually)
Graduation from an accredited college with a master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or nursing; plus two years of clinical experience and is a registered licensed eligible mental health professional. A registered licensed eligible mental health professional has been approved by the applicable Virginia health regulatory board as a superviser in clinical social work or a resident in clinical psychology, professional counseling, substance abuse treatment practice, or marriage and family therapy.

Certificates and Licenses Required: Registered licensure eligibility with one year of successful licensure supervision completed and able to qualify for licensure requirement to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 2 years of employment in one of the following: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, a check with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and a driving record to the satisfaction of the employer. Able to operate keyboard driven computer equipment and read data on monitor. Annual TB test. Must be able to observe, process, and document clinical information and make clinical interventions based on client needs. Must be able to access, input and retrieve computer data.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to drive car, transport clients including some travel throughout the state of Virginia, make home/community-based visits. All duties perform with or without reasonable accommodations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of working with adult mentally ill population involved in the criminal justice system. Knowledge of community base resources and treatment services. Experience providing discharge planning services and outreach services to high risk seriously mentally ill and co-occurring population. Experience collaborating with multiple human services systems and agencies. Inpatient work experience in psychiatric hospital. Experience working with programs such as PACT, intensive case management.
