Attends Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meetings; digitally records proceedings and simultaneously takes notes using a computer software program. Independently composes detailed correspondence and minutes. Assists clerk in preparing Returns of Record to the Court, including verbatim transcripts for litigation. Checks public hearing notices for accuracy by reviewing information contained in land and tax assessment records. Prepares and distributes materials for weekly BZA meetings. Responds to phone, face-to-face, and electronic inquiries. Helps maintain BZA agendas, speaker lists, and application files. Works with archives records, and performs other duties as assigned. Requires strong abilities in written and oral communications; knowledge and experience with word processing software and associated document formatting; ability to follow instructions in the performance of a variety of duties requiring attention to detail; and the ability to work independently.

Math Skills
Basic math skills.

Word Processing/Typing
Intermediate skills in use of applicable Microsoft Office Word.

PC Skills
Intermediate skills in the use of applicable Microsoft Office Suite software;
Intermediate skills in the use of agency specific software applications.

Ability to communicate well through written and oral means.

Ability to gather, integrate, and analyze simple data.

Interpersonal Abilities
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both external and internal contacts.

Executive Assistance
Ability to maintain confidentiality and be sensitive to political issues.

Employment Standards

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and three years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

  • Knowledge of Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance and Comprehensive Planning process.
  • Experience working with boards, authorities, and/or commissions.
  • Experience and knowledge using For The Record (FTR) or equivalent recording software.
  • Skills in note-taking, proofreading, customer service, and organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion, interact in a friendly and customer-service oriented manner.
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
