Works as part of the the pipe-repair section of the division. Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged primarily in maintenance and construction activities involving repairs to the Wastewater Collection System. Supervises the crew in excavation, installation of shoring/sheeting, placement of base material or concrete, pipe installation, installation of repair clamps or there patching techniques, placement of backfill, and compaction while repairing cave-ins and broken sanitary sewer lines. May be involved in the paving operation of the manhole section of the division. Organizes the crew and estimates the amount of material necessary for each job. Performs job layout and completes of tracking documents. Prepares and maintains writtens records. Ensures crew's compliance with work rules and guidelines, and that work is completed in accordance with VDOT specifications. Responsible for job site safety, including traffic and pedstrian control. Engages in routine manual labor as required; duties are performed under general supervision.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous field experience in sanitary sewer maintenance. Possession of Erosion and Sediment Control Contractor Certification. Experience using computers.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid commercial driver's license (CDL) class "A" is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to enter into permitted confined spaces using OSHA certified non-entry retrieval system which includes a safety harness with a weight restriction of 310 pounds. Able to lift/slide up to 90 pounds with assistance; and perform manual labor with various equipment and hand tools. Must pass a pre-employment physical exam.
