Assistant Vice President, Communications & Engagement

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Assistant Vice President, Communications and Engagement within the Office of the President. Reporting to the Vice President, Communications and Engagement, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) will help establish and manage an operation that improves communications with staff and faculty and, ultimately, strengthens employee engagement in our workplace.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the vice president for communications and engagement on strategic communications projects and university-wide, internal campaigns;
  • Build on the university's strategic planning process by developing initiatives to communicate the university's mission, vision and goals throughout the organization to ensure each employee understands his/her role in supporting our shared mission;
  • Evaluate existing communications channels and mechanisms, identify areas for improvement as well as new opportunities;
  • Coordinate internal channel improvement projects as appropriate, in conjunction with key internal partners and external vendors;
  • Devote special attention to ensuring the university has multiple feedback channels -- utilizing technological and face-to-face methods -- allowing for more interactive engagement;
  • Establish key metrics that measure the effectiveness of internal communications efforts and ensure these are reported to key stakeholders on a regular basis and are used as a catalyst for innovation and continuous improvement;
  • Lead effort to establish consistent editorial content and production standards across all of the university's internal communications activities, and engage content contributors and content producers to ensure adoption of guidelines across the university;
  • Identify opportunities to support the university's engagement efforts to enhance the employee experience and help position UMUC as an employer of choice;
  • Act as deputy in the vice president's absence; and
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

Required education and experience: An earned Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning; at least five to seven (5-7) years of progressive experience in employee communications; a proven track record of delivering results; as well as exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred education & experience: An earned Master's degree and/or specialized certificate or training; experience working in a global organization; excellent project management and organizational skills; corporate intranet content management and governance; applying new technologies to internal communications; working in collaborative, cross-functional environments; positive people management, mentoring and team-building skills; as well as working in executive positioning, organizational development, change management, higher education, and/or public relations roles.
