Linux Systems Engineer III

Office of Information Technology

Exempt, Regular, 100% Full-Time, Pay Grade 3.5

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Linux Systems Engineer III in the Office of Information Technology. Reporting to the Manager of Server Engineering, the Linux Systems Engineer III will be responsible for the day to day support of the Linux environment at UMUC including, but not limited to, the classroom delivery platform, and internal systems support. Currently, more than 42,000 students attend UMUC nationally, and an additional 33,852 students attend UMUC at on site classes in more than 25 countries throughout the world.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Build, maintain and configure Red Hat Linux systems within Amazon Web Services and VMware environments

  • Work with customers to define technical solutions that meet their requirements and industry best practices

  • Introduce efficiencies around processes and procedures

  • Train and mentor junior system engineers

  • Work closely with internal development teams to create scalable solutions and deploy applications

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Must assist, guide, and share information with technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Must work concurrently on multiple projects and adjust to changes in priorities

  • Monitor system health and promptly respond to outages to support an uptime goal of 99.9%

  • Manage ticket queue for Tier 3 support

  • Participate in rotating on-call requirements

  • Other job-related duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree, and 10 to 15 years of related hands-on experience

  • Proficiency with Red Hat Linux Administration

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS), specifically EC2, Lambda and Route53 technologies

  • Expert knowledge in administering and building servers, capacity planning, and performance monitoring within an AWS environment

  • Knowledgeable in web server configuration best practices and experience with managing and troubleshooting Tomcat, Apache, Java applications

  • Ability to work independently on tasks and as part of a project team, taking tasks from conceptualization to completion

  • Self-starter with the ability to quickly learn new tools and products

  • Fluency in Unix/Linux systems programming languages and tools (Perl, Unix shells, Java, etc)

  • Strong problem-solving skills

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Configuration management using Puppet

  • Experience performing maintenance and optimization of existing clustered Splunk deployments

  • Experience with Ansible and Python
