Internal Communications Manager, Office of Strategic Communications - Public Affairs

Georgetown University's Office of Strategic Communications, a division of the Office of Public Affairs, represents and promotes the university and its faculty, students, programs and policies to a variety of internal and external constituents. The office provides strategic communications consultation, media relations efforts and strategic Web communications on behalf of Georgetown University, its faculty, administrators, academic programs and staff, and coordinates activities to promote Georgetown officials and expertise to internal and external constituencies.  The goal of internal communications is to increase stakeholder understanding of the university's positions and aspirations.

The Internal Communications Manager works across the university to increase awareness, understanding, and connection to the university leadership among members of the university community, fostering an internal cultural of transparency and shared understanding. S/he has a key role in internal communications for senior leaders of the university and for departments within university services, specifically Financial Affairs, Auxiliary Services, Facilities Management, and Student Affairs on strategic communications to the university community.  The Manager serves a deputy to the Associate Vice President for Strategic Communications to effectively communicate and protect the university brand and position. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Contributes to the university's communications strategies by generating increased visibility and awareness of the university's objectives, goals and positions.
  • Works with the AVP on execution of university messaging and narrative to ensure university leaders can articulate university narrative and priorities.
  • Designs communication plans to effectively communicate university messaging around strategic initiatives - to include action to disseminate narratives and positions throughout the university community.
  • Coordinates with university leadership to both design and implement messaging and distribution through coordinated communication plans.
  • Leads communication with the Georgetown University community to articulate university positions and initiatives related to academic and student life issues, university finances, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Coordinates with university leadership, especially in university services, to ensure accurate and timely communications of university positions to internal and external audiences.
  • Takes the lead in drafting communications in the voice of university leaders to students, faculty, staff, and the Georgetown community.
  • The ICM will have a key role in internal communications for senior leaders of the university and for departments within university services, specifically Finance, Auxiliary Services, Facilities and Student Affairs on strategic communications to the university community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field of study
  • 2+ years of experience in public relations, journalism, broadcasting, higher education, non-profit institution, or related area
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, good judgment, ability to work on deadline, demonstrated interpersonal skills, and flexibility
  • Willingness and availability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and maintain a professional demeanor at all times, especially in demanding situations

Preferred

Experience working in the Georgetown University community for at least 12 months
