Despite their large potential to help people mitigate and adapt to climate change, nature-based solutions comprise just 2% of climate-related investment. More pathways for private sector investment in forest conservation, wetlands restoration, coastal management, and other nature-based solutions are sorely needed to reach the estimated $300 billion per year the world needs to adapt to climate impacts. Understanding climate risks and opportunities from a private sector perspective is critical to making nature-based solutions business as usual. A global dataset from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) gives us a window into this perspective. Conservation International (CI) seeks a data-savvy intern to assist us with analysis of climate and water risks reported by 2,000 major global companies to their investors. The research seeks to (1) understand the extent to which companies are currently using nature-based solutions to manage climate impacts and reduce emissions and (2) identify opportunities to advance nature-based solutions in key sectors and geographies.

The research will inform several potential research outputs, including submissions to peer-reviewed publications, business-facing information sheets, and webinars/presentations to industry and investor groups. It will  also guide CI's Center for Environmental Leadership in Business as it continues engaging with major global companies (Starbucks, Walmart, BHP Billiton, and others) on climate change.
