In 2008, CQ Press was acquired by SAGE. The CQ Press imprint began in the early 1970s as the books division of Congressional Quarterly. CQ was founded in 1945 by Nelson Poynter, the publisher of the St. Petersburg Times, and his wife, Henrietta, with the goal of providing a link between local newspapers and the “inside-the-beltway” politics of Washington, DC. Some of the first titles the imprint published are still selling strong such as Roger Davidson’s Congress and Its Members and Doris Graber’s Mass Media and American Politics. In the 1990s, the company grew its list beyond its traditional focus on American government intro international relations, comparative politics, and public affairs.
SAGE is currently seeking Publisher candidates to work in either our Thousand Oaks, CA or Washington, DC offices. This role is responsible for acquiring and developing a comprehensive range of new and revised core textbooks with integrated digital content and resources to established targets set for the CQ Press imprint at SAGE Publishing.
Publisher will devise and lead on forward-looking strategic list planning, and in close collaboration with College Sales and Marketing, achieve accelerated and sustainable growth in revenue, market share, and discipline ranking in the discipline Political Science.
Another key component of this position is to work with current and potential new authors, contributing editors, digital resource subject matter experts, and freelancers, as well as internal staff including colleagues from eLearning, production, finance, marketing and sales, art/design, IT, and legal to accomplish acquisitions, content development, digital product development, market development, and transmittal tasks.
This role also will manage the activities, professional development, and performance of acquisitions editors, editorial assistants, or other staff as assigned, in the discipline of Political Science. This includes the development of strategic list plans and setting and monitoring of signing, transmittal, and publishing targets (or KPIs – key performance indicators).
Qualifications include, but not limited to, the following:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 5 years proven successful acquisitions experience in higher ed publishing
- 5 years work experience in editorial, sales or marketing in higher ed publishing
- 2 years experience managing acquisition editors, in-house support and freelance editors
- Ability to travel to conferences and on campus visits as required
- Acquisitions experience in the Social Science or History disciplines
- Acquisitions experience managing a large discipline with multiple interdisciplinary subjects
- Work cohesively in a team environment across multiple departments in different time zones
