Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, Science Learning Center has a need for a full-time Instructional Associate
, position #S13247.  Work schedule is 40 hours per week and may vary by semester based on the needs of the department; will involve evening and/or Saturday hours.


Job Summary:

Position provides instructional assistance to students in the Science Learning Center through one-on-one and group tutoring sessions in biology, chemistry and related areas.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide tutorial assistance with assigned learning activities in biology, chemistry and related areas
  • Suggest activities that would assist students in courses served by Science Learning Center
  • Assist students in use of science models, equipment, etc.
  • Assist students with remediation of previously learned skills
  • Monitor testing as needed
  • Answer students questions regarding computer related information
  • Give feedback to instructors on student issues and concerns
  • Develop material, in coordination with faculty and staff, to be used by students in courses served by Science Learning Center
  • Contribute to our resource collection by compiling new worksheets and study packets for our chemistry and biology resource inventory.
  • Assist Manager in supervisory roles when necessary, which may include directly supervising student assistant activities, and corresponding with faculty members and office staff.
  • Provide reports and documents to the learning center manager, faculty or dean as directed by the learning center manager
  • Maintain a safe and positive learning environment in the center.
  • Attend planning meetings that involve the center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Biology or Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years tutoring or teaching experience.
  • Ability to tutor one-on-one in biology, chemistry and related areas.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Masters degree in Biology or Chemistry or closely related field.
  • Ability to tutor in both biology & chemistry is preferred.
  • Postsecondary tutoring experience preferred.
  • Ability to tutor in anatomy & physiology in addition to both biology & chemistry is a plus.
  • Experience working and tutoring in a higher education setting
  • Experience working in a diverse, multicultural setting
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic computer problems
