PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

For Love of Children (FLOC) is a community-based nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. Since 1965, FLOC has created innovative programs that address the needs of our city's most vulnerable children and families. FLOC's mission is to provide educational services beyond the classroom that help students with high academic and financial need succeed from first grade through college and career.

Since its inception in 1994, FLOC's Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) has been providing one-on-one tutoring to struggling students. NTP uses step-by-step curricula to help students gain the fundamental Reading and Math skills they need to reach grade level competency. Students are guided through curricula at an individualized pace and they gain confidence as they demonstrate their ability to master concepts.

POSTION DESCRIPTION

FLOC is currently seeking two self-motivated, dynamic and flexible adults who are passionate about the education of marginalized youth, to join our NTP team. Under the supervision of our full-time staff, the NTP interns will act as Site Coordinators for our tutoring program during the Summer Academy. Duties include:

Student Recruitment and Enrollment

  • Process student applications
  • Conduct appropriate assessments with students
  • Identify eligible students for the NTP program by completing rubric
  • Assist with placement of students within the curricula

On-site Program Coordination

  • Ensure program materials are organized and available at the start of program
  • Collect attendance on site
  • Match student/tutor pairs at the beginning of the session
  • Provide up to date information for all program participants
  • Distribute and collect lesson plans
  • Answer tutor questions before, during and after tutoring
  • Facilitate group sessions as needed
  • Monitor student progress through direct observation
  • Communicate concerns directly to site supervisor
  • Other duties as necessary to ensure an efficient and effective program

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in weekly NTP staff meetings
  • Review lesson plans to ensure compliance with curricula
  • Call and email students and tutors who were unexpectedly absent from program
  • Prepare and submit incident reports when necessary
  • Maintain and update data sheets on student progress and performance
  • Lead the preparation for special events at tutoring sites
  • Assist with other tasks as necessary to ensure effective and efficient program

Each intern will help to facilitate two tutoring programs per week during the evening. Interns will be expected to work 35-40 hours per week.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate would be:

  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Able to multitask effectively and thrive in a fast paced environment
  • Able to demonstrate an interest and experience with educational programming
  • An excellent oral and written communicator
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and database management
  • Experienced in leadership positions
  • Passionate about our mission and the youth we serve
  • Experience with the Neighborhood Tutoring Program is a plus
