Advocate IIIs work in an interdisciplinary team to provide services for women in N Street Village’s programs:

  • Miriam’s House serves up to 25 women who are living with HIV/ AIDS
  • Patricia Handy Place for Women (PHPW) transitional shelter programs helps clients gain stability and move on to permanent housing. The PHPW offers two types of transitional programs: 1) a therapeutic temporary housing program for 13 homeless senior women 62 years of age or older; and 2) a medical respite program for up to 12 homeless women operated in coordination with Unity Health Care.
  • Patricia Handy Place for Women (PHPW) temporary shelter program provides safe, trauma-informed shelter services to up to 188 women nightly and also provides a service-enriched day program where clients can access resources to help them gain stability.


  • Develop rapport with each resident through routine contact and communication
  • Under supervision of LICSW, conduct initial intakes and meet with clients, providing outreach as needed
  • Under supervision of LICSW, develop, implement and evaluate case plans and write clear progress notes
  • Maintain, routine progress notation, collateral information and records, correspondence, client contracts, agreements and consequences in an accurate and timely manner
  • Under supervision of LICSW, maintain intake paperwork, assessment and case plan forms in an accurate and timely manner
  • Under supervision of LICSW, plan and execute educational and therapeutic groups relevant to needs of client population
  • Coordinate with other programs and outside agencies for client services as needed
  • Immediately report serious incidents, allegations, security breaches, or sensitive situations to manager. Complete incident reports in accordance with NSV policy
  • Respond to immediate client needs, prevent crises, resolve conflicts, and enforce program rules
  • Sign off on clients who take medication with staff supervision, and assist clients in keeping track of refills
  • Build and maintain quality working relationships with other teams, co-workers, outside resources and other stakeholders
  • Under supervision of LICSW, represent the social work perspective by participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, all-staff meetings, regular supervision meetings, and trainings
  • Provide feedback to team and manager on program policies and procedures
  • Participate in program quality improvement activities that improve program policies and procedures and client and program outcomes
  • Assist in planning and execution of group outings and activities, including leading regular floor meetings
  • Follow all organizational and agency policies and procedures, and accurately answer questions from peers about policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned


  • LGSW and at least 1 year of relevant experience with a focus on one of the following areas: mental health, physical health, addictions, employment, trauma; LGSW within 90 days of employment will be considered
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and the related issues of addiction and mental illness strongly preferred

  • Knowledge and proven experience in applying the theoretical frameworks and/or evidence based practices in one of the following: workforce development, health promotion/disease prevention, or clinical mental health or addiction
  • Knowledge and experience in proper use of crisis management and CPI skills
  • Communicate honestly and productively with manager, co-workers, outside agencies and clients
  • Make decisions that advance the organization’s mission based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment
  • Possess knowledge of DC social service resources and laws
  • Possess strong cultural competence, including communication ability with a diverse population
  • Capacity to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Multi-task and be adaptable in an ever-changing environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the internet; ability to learn database program
  • Ability to maintain healthy boundaries
  • Must be able to arrive to work and scheduled meetings on time
  • Must have ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

  3. Patricia Handy Place for Women 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
  4. Miriam’s House 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday
