Director of Multicultural Programs and Fair Practices

Exempt, Regular, Full-Time, Pay Grade 3.5

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Director of Multicultural Programs and Fair Practices in the Office of Diversity and Equity. Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, the Director of Multicultural Programs and Fair Practices develops, coordinates, and delivers diversity-related training for students, staff, and faculty throughout the University in areas such as workplace diversity, cross-cultural competency and communication, sexual harassment, etc. S/he will coordinate with University departments and units in order to design and implement training programs and other initiatives that enhance the University's diversity presence. S/he maintains the curriculum related to diversity and cultural needs/opportunities in order to ensure that the diversity mission and core value is present throughout the University. S/he establishes a learning environment for diversity that is educational, interactive, informative, and experiential. S/he oversees the Equal Employment Opportunity Policy and the Fair Practices Unit. S/he is responsible for stateside investigations and collaborates with Europe and Asia Equal Opportunity Officers. S/he ensures that all investigations are conducted in a timely manner and within the established policy guidelines. ​


  • Plans, develops, and implements a University-wide Diversity Competency/Training Model
  • Organizes and diversity and intercultural competency learning programs, events, and activities such as Working in a Diverse Workforce, Cultural Sensitivity Training, etc.
  • Develops and coordinates curriculum for diversity workshops, seminars, and discussions
  • Conducts EEO investigations and authors investigative reports
  • Provides both informal and formal opportunities to resolve EEO disputes and concerns
  • Ensures all EEO reports are complete and meet the standards set in the EEO policy and procedures
  • Tracks diversity training participation for UMUC staff and faculty
  • Researches and evaluates trends in employee development, diversity, and intercultural competency learning programs
  • Develops informational and promotional materials, such as posters, flyers, or web pages, etc.
  • Identifies experts (locally and nationally) that may serve to educate University staff, faculty, and students regarding matters of diversity and inclusion
  • Schedules regular events
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: S/he will have a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in the coordination or training of human resources, relations, diversity, and/or intercultural competency learning programs. S/he possesses a minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in organizational development, psychology, human resources or a related field. S/he must have excellent communication ability, including public speaking and written skills. S/he is able to interact effectively and work collaboratively with people from diverse cultural and identity groups.

Knowledge of: curriculum development; instructional design and delivery; methods, principles, and strategies of adult learning theory and organizational development; presentation, public speaking, training, and facilitation methodologies; interpersonal communication and human relations theories/concepts; trends and issues related to diversity, and intercultural competency learning programs.

Ability to: work with diverse populations; assess and provide appropriate interventions based on individual/group intercultural competency level; maintain sensitivity and confidentiality related to human development issues; research and evaluate trends in diversity, and intercultural competency learning areas; assess competency training and development needs; plan, evaluate, and implement competency learning programs; coordinate the work of others; facilitate/train employees in the use of a variety of diversity and intercultural competency learning concepts or skill areas; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships in the course of performing assigned duties.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred
