Financial Accounting Manager - Division of Financial Affairs

The mission of Georgetown University's Division of Financial Affairs is to participate as a proactive partner in fulfilling Georgetown University's mission of teaching, research, scholarship, service and identity by planning, developing, and providing professional accounting, reporting, financial services and support.

The Financial Accounting Manager is responsible for the effective and efficient review and monitoring of cash & cash equivalents, accounts receivable, prepaid expenses, property plant & equipment and the review of the general ledger. The Accounting Manager supports the Director with special projects and workflow process improvements, and guides and supports staff in providing excellent customer service.  Reporting to the Director of Financial Accounting, the Manager has duties that include but are not limited to:

Management of Accounting Staff

  • Establishes goals and objectives for each year and provides training as needed.  
  • Monitors and provides advice on the progress to enhance professional development. 
  • Supports overall department goals and objectives.

Financial Review & Reporting

  • Reviews the general ledger and performs the first round review of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules to ensure compliance with GAAP and other guidelines. 
  • Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the University's financial reporting and the general ledger structure. 
  • Ensures accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close.
  • Reviews and approves journal entries and reconciliations. 

Annual Audit

  • Assists in the timely completion of preliminary and year-end audits. 
  • Prepares and reviews audit schedules to support financial statements and related footnotes.
  • Coordinates gathering of assigned audit supporting documentation from various departments across the University community.


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance - preference for a Master's degree in accounting (MA) or business administration (MBA) and/or a CPA license
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in accounting - to include at least 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Excel and other Microsoft applications
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrably excellent understanding of GAAP accounting standards, AICPA policies, and NACUBO guidelines
  • Ability to develop an atmosphere of teamwork within the department
  • A commitment to retention and cross training for the benefit of General Accounting staff and the university in an ever-changing environment
