In addition to meeting the basic education requirement for this position, candidates must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.
Specialized experience for this position includes the following:
1) For both new and archaic structural systems, providing technical consultation on a broad range of difficult technical issues and problems involving Structural Engineering; providing technical review of design calculations, analyses, drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with project objectives and standards; and developing structural engineering aspects of in-house designs (i.e. structural engineering, structural design analyses and computations, drawings, specifications, etc.)
2) For both new and archaic materials, knowledge of advanced engineering principles applied to materials science, structural engineering including materials such as brick masonry, stone masonry, early ironwork, early steelwork, terra cotta flat arches, steel and concrete.
3) Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex structural engineering problems for both new construction and modification of historic structures.
4) Providing analysis of physical security solutions for architecturally sensitive sites and facilities.
A degree in Professional Engineering. The curriculum must:
(1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or
(2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: a) statics, dynamics; b) strength of materials; c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; d) thermodynamics; e) electrical fields and circuits; f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished:
(1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and
(2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
