Environmental Compliance Officer

The George Mason University Environmental Health and Safety Office--within the department of Safety, Emergency, and Enterprise Risk Management (SEERM)--is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic person for an Environmental Compliance Officer position. Responsibilities: The primary focus of this position is to support the Environmental Health and Safety Office, Environmental Compliance Program. Position responsibilities include: * Developing and implementing a university-wide environmental management system (EMS); * Providing hazardous and universal waste program management; * Maintaining existing stationary source air permits and preparing annual emissions reports; * Preparing annual Tier II reports; * Conducting chemical spill response and illicit discharge investigations; * Developing and/or updating required environmental compliance documents; * Develop and/or coordinate mandatory environmental training programs; and * Providing support to other EHS programs or activities, as assigned.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, environmental management, or other related scientific field (engineering, environmental science, etc.), and demonstrated relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * Knowledge of basic computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, image processing and databases); * Knowledge of federal, state and local laws related to environmental protection; * Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations related to the transportation of hazardous materials; * Ability to maintain accurate and organized records; * Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written communication; * Ability to self-motivate and complete tasks without supervision; * Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and maintain effective working relationships; * Ability to safely and independently move 50 pounds; as well as bend, crawl and kneel; * Ability to work and stand for extended periods of time; * Ability to work after hours and varying hours when needed; * Employment contingent upon satisfactory background check; * Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record (must be insurable); * Certification in CPR/First Aid (or ability to obtain within six months of hire); * Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification (or ability to obtain within six months of hire); and * DOT Hazmat General and Security Awareness training (or ability to obtain within six months of hire).

Preferred Qualifications: * Master’s degree; and * Experience at an institute of higher education or private research facility.
