Laboratory Safety Specialist

The George Mason University Environmental Health and Safety Office--within the department of Safety, Emergency, and Enterprise Risk Management--is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for a Laboratory Safety Specialist position. Responsibilities: The position is primarily responsible for: laboratory and non-laboratory hazardous waste services; equipment certification and testing; and participating in laboratory safety inspections. The position will also support the Radiation Safety Program and other laboratory safety programs as assigned.

The incumbent has dual work locations at the Fairfax and Science and Technology (formerly Prince William) campuses, based upon workload as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, life sciences, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience; * Knowledge of computer applications including but not limited to: word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, image processing, and databases; * Knowledge of chemical, biological, and radiological hazards in laboratories; * Knowledge of regulations, guidelines, and standards for laboratory safety; * Ability to physically respond to laboratory spills and emergencies; * Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written communication; * Ability to self-motivate and complete tasks without supervision; * Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team; * Ability to work well with coworkers; * Ability to independently and safely move 40 pounds; and bend, crawl, and kneel; * Ability to work and stand for extended periods of time; * Ability to work after hours and varying hours when needed; * Demonstrated relevant work experience; * Certification in CPR/First Aid or must have the ability to obtain within six months of hire; and * Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification, or must have the ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: * Experience working at an academic/higher education or private research environment.
