Horton's Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K - 12 living in one of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC, called Wellington Park. In this neighborhood, 80 percent of adults do not have a high school diploma, and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed volunteers, Horton's Kids' goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports. Horton's Kids is seeking a highly-motivated person to serve as our Youth Development Intern for (1) Summer or (2) Fall semesters. This position would be a great fit for someone interested in education, social/emotional development of youth, working with low income youth and families, or social work. Desired experience and competencies include the following:

  • Ability to connect with children and adults from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills

Responsibilities:

  • Research
  1. Conduct research on youth development best practices related to youth engagement, behavior management, character-building, college and career prep, mentoring, life skills, and summer programming.
  2. Organize and share research findings.
  • Assist with Implementation of Youth Development Programming
  1. Support programs staff in prepping for and facilitating weekly activities for youth.
  2. Communicate with participants and families via phone, flyers, etc.
  3. Assist with chaperoning some weekend enrichment activities.
  • Data Input and Purging
  1. Input data related to attendance, assessments, surveys, report cards, and pay checks using designated spreadsheets and/or Salesforce.
  2. Report out data (to staff and/or participants) as needed.
  3. Sort through hard copy files; save and shred/recycle as needed
  • Administrative Duties
  1. Provide office and staff support as needed.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • The intern is expected to work between 20 - 25 hours per week; exact hours are flexible. This is an unpaid internship, but all interns whose internships are not funded by school or other grants receive a monthly $100 transportation stipend to defray commuting costs.
  • Horton's Kids' staff works in a metro-accessible office located on Capitol Hill. Interns may be asked to work some evening hours, do some lifting, or assist at Horton's Kids' academic programs.
