Horton's Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K - 12 living in one of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC, called Wellington Park. In this neighborhood, 80 percent of adults do not have a high school diploma, and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed volunteers, Horton's Kids' goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports. We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented student with strong communication and writing skills to intern during (1) Spring 2017, (2) Summer 2017, or (3) Fall 2017. This position is a great fit for students who are interested in a nonprofit career and want to learn more about how nonprofits raise funds and communicate with their supporters or Communications, English, or Business students. Interns will work directly with our development (fundraising) team and have access to a variety of projects.
Responsibilities depend on experience, skills, interest, and schedule, but may include: - Donor and Foundation Relations Support - Soliciting in-kind donations from local businesses - Event management and planning -Helping with a year-end, direct mail appeal - Implementing components of the strategic upgrading of Horton's Kids' donor database - Representing Horton's Kids at charity fairs - Preparing for fundraising events, including outreach, silent auction, logistics, managing RSVPs, and creating collateral - Researching potential grants and individual donors - Drafting applications for grants and charity events Communications - Developing social media copy - Interviewing staff and the children in our programs for features in e-newsletters and social media - Copyediting donor materials
Essential Experience and Competencies: - Excellent writing and editing skills - your submission will not be considered if there are grammar or spelling mistakes - Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences - Ability to multitask under pressure and to meet deadlines - Ability to work independently and think creatively - Attention to detail - Strong organizational skills - Enthusiasm for our mission - Flexibility with changing situations - Experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (InDesign is a plus but not required.) - Background in website maintenance and graphic design is a plus but not required
Interns work 15-20 hours per week; exact hours are flexible. This is an unpaid internship, but all interns whose internships are not funded by school or other grants receive a monthly $100 transportation stipend to defray commuting costs.
Horton's Kids' staff works in a metro-accessible office located on Capitol Hill. Interns may be asked to work some evening hours, do some lifting, or assist at Horton's Kids' academic programs.
