The Folger Shakespeare Library, located in Washington, D.C., is seeking a well rounded and skilled Building Services Technician with experience maintaining HVAC and other mechanical systems. The Building Services Technician will work with other technicians, the Chief Engineer, the Property Manager, and the Head of Facilities to keep our buildings operating smoothly and within our safety standards. As a member of the Facilities team, the technician will be responsible for completing work orders in a timely manner while maintaining records of those tasks. Their daily tasks will vary and may include; maintaining mechanical systems, HVAC repairs, assembling furniture, drywall repairs and painting, installation or repair of electrical elements, plumbing repairs, replacing light bulbs, investigating a mechanical issue, bleeding radiators, moving furniture for an event, helping maintain the cleanliness of the building, helping with snow or ice removal, or conducting safety reviews. This is an hourly paid position that normally works 35 hours a week, Monday through Friday, and comes with an excellent benefits package. The Building Services Technicians are considered ‘essential staff’ and are expected to respond for emergency repairs or for snow/weather emergencies outside of normal working hours. 

Applicants should have a high school degree or equivalent certification, and have minimum of 2 years experience maintaining mechanical systems and completing building maintenance in an office building, with a preference for experience in a historic building or museum setting. Experience with maintaining HVAC systems is required. Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials needed to repair and maintain the systems discussed above is required. Applicants should have the problem solving and technical skills needed to solve maintenance problems, have the instincts to know when to make a decision versus when to seek advice, have strong spoken and written communication skills, and excellent customer service skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with maintaining mechanical systems. This position is highly mobile and requires the ability to stand for extended periods, lift and carry heavy furniture and equipment, climb stairs and ladders regularly, and react quickly as needed.
