Joining the Secret Service, Office of Technical Development and Mission Support, Technical Security Division will allow you to provide specialized technical expertise and operational support to develop and implement countermeasures to protected persons and/or facilities. Apply for this exciting opportunity to impact the mission of the agency by providing operational support to protective operations and criminal investigations through the identification, fielding and monitoring of unique or specially tailored equipment necessary to provide protective countermeasures, document criminal activity and acquire criminal target location. This Physical Security Specialist position, specializing in the area of technical surveillance countermeasures, starts at a salary of $50,935 (GL-7, Step 1), with promotion potential to $123,234 (GS-13, Step 10). This position is covered by Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO) and additional compensation may be paid at the rate of up to 25% of the base salary.

  • The incumbent may be required to travel approximately 25% to 30% of the time to temporary protective sites or in support of criminal investigations in the United States and OCONUS.

  • You qualify for the GL-07 (starting salary $50,935) level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-05 level performing duties such as: performing Technical Surveillance Countermeasures operations; identifying technical penetrations and vulnerabilities that could be used to compromise sensitive and national security information; and performing technical surveillance functions utilizing a wide variety of technical surveillance equipment and instrumentation. OR

    A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. Please click here, and read Section F, "superior academic achievement", to see if you qualify under this provision; OR

    One full year of graduate level education at an accredited or pre-accredited college or university; OR

    A combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. This will be calculated using your résumé and unofficial transcripts or a list of courses/course hours submitted with your application.

    You qualify for the GL-09 level (starting salary $56,805) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-07 level performing duties such as: performing Technical Surveillance Countermeasures operations that include radio frequency signal adjudication; computer and network inspections; electrical and physical component detection; physical and logical telephony inspections; identifying and neutralizing technical penetrations and vulnerabilities that could be used to compromise sensitive and national security information; and performing advance technical surveillance functions utilizing a wide variety of technical surveillance equipment and instrumentation. OR

    Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. OR

    A combination of graduate level education and experience. This will be calculated using your résumé and unofficial transcripts or a list of courses/course hours submitted with your application.

    National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Conditions of Employment If selected for this position, you will be required to:

    • Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
    • Submit to a polygraph examination prior to your appointment.
    • Possess a valid state motor vehicle operator's license and maintain a valid license while you occupy the position.
    • Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory. You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, unless you received a pardon or your conviction was expunged or set aside.
    • Complete a pre-employment medical examination (including vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities) by an authorized Government physician and be determined physically fit to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties. You will be required to undergo regular physical examinations and to maintain a level of physical fitness in accordance with the standards and policies of this agency.
    • Sign a mobility agreement stating your willingness to accept assignments anywhere within the United States and overseas.
    • In addition, all applicants who are not currently employed in the law enforcement provision of FERS or the Civil Service Retirement System must be less than 40 years of age at the time of entrance on duty. (Unless you have previous service in a Federal Civilian Law Enforcement position covered by special civil service retirement provision, including early or mandatory retirement or are a veteran).
    • Successfully complete an 8 week Mixed Basic training course.
    • Work in environments that invlove risks of unknown hazards, as well as discomforts associatd with working in hard to reach, dirty and hazardous areas of buildings, facilities and outside areas.
    • Work without having control of the environmental conditions or schedule of operations, and will be required to be flexible to ensure the mission is completed.
    • Handle explosives and/or radio frequency (RF) exposure.
    • Work with regular and re-occuring physical exertion.
    • Work long hours with minimal breaks, to be on call 24 hours per day.
