University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Program Chair for the Graduate Learning Initiatives Department within The Graduate School. UMUC is one of twelve degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM). Working adults, military personnel, and other students around the globe are achieving their academic goals through UMUC's innovative educational options, including online instruction, accelerated academic programs, and classroom-based courses taught during the daytime, evenings, and weekends. Currently, more than 42,000 students attend UMUC nationally, and an additional 33,852 students attend UMUC at on site classes in more than 25 countries throughout the world; about 56,000 students are active duty military, veterans, and their families. In 2013, UMUC had over 261,000 online course enrollments.
The Program Chair manages the development, promotion and direction of assigned GLI courses; manages TGS tutoring; completes special projects related to evaluation of student learning (core competencies) and other school-wide learning; collaborates with peers in other departments on university-wide initiatives. This position reports to the Vice Dean of the Graduate Learning Initiatives Department.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Participate in the continuing development, management, and promotion of GLI courses, including the core “foundation” courses, the non-credit academic preparation courses, and other GLI offerings;
- Employ best practices in adult and continuing education with the ability to provide direct input and guidance to faculty members in the areas of writing, critical thinking, statistics, leadership, teamwork, and ethics.
- Develop courses in alignment with TGS experiential learning models, regularly update and administer course content, maintain model classrooms, schedule and staff faculty, and oversee and mentor faculty accordingly to UMUC Best Practices;
- Work with other UMUC units to develop processes to monitor the quality of GLI courses and measure their effectiveness in terms of student learning;
- Contribute to the design and implementation of student learning outcome assessment activities in the GLI program and other TGS programs as required;
- Maintain the program's current tutoring initiative, which includes writing and quantitative tutors;
- Hire, develop, and monitor tutoring personnel to ensure effectiveness;
- Develop performance dashboards that analyze data and use metrics to map program and tutoring effectiveness and utility;
- Envision more innovative approaches to tutoring that will better support student learning and that will become part of a broader university student support and retention framework; and
- Consult with all TGS programs as requested to provide input into course content, design and learning assessment related to writing, critical thinking, statistics, leadership, teamwork, and ethics
- Program Chairs are required to teach 6 credits of on-load per year, generally related to their programs. Overload teaching is available according to graduate school limits and when it does not interfere with the Chair's primary responsibilities.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Terminal degree in a field related to education, teaching, curriculum development or management, with deep understanding of education/teaching principles and practices;
- Degree must be from an accredited institution of higher learning;
- A self-starter with strong initiative and work ethic, as well as the ability to work with minimal supervision and manage details;
- 5-7 years of professional and/or managerial work experience teaching and managing continuing or general education courses, with strong experience in writing, critical thinking, statistics, and leadership/teamwork;
- Three years of teaching experience with excellent student evaluations, preferably online with adult, part-time students;
- Excellent administrative, verbal and written communication skills; experience in managing diverse teams and projects;
- Ability to design processes and reports that monitor the performance of courses and learning interventions; and
- Strong data analytic skills, including the ability to perform, analyze, explain, and present statistical information.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Degree and experience that provides the ability to develop and maintain a range of courses that support student learning in a graduate school that focuses on management;
- Background in developing and managing tutoring programs and other types of learning support initiatives;
- Experience with experiential learning models that includes teaching, mentoring and developing curriculum; and
- Strong abilities in the area of data analysis in order to support curriculum development and to monitor the effectiveness of the courses offered through the unit.
