Assistant Director of Recruitment and Outreach

The George Mason University Office of the Provost invites applications for a full-time Assistant Director of Recruitment and Outreach at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC) (http://smconservation.gmu.edu/). The position will be based jointly between SMSC, located at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) (https://nationalzoo.si.edu/conservation/) in Front Royal, Va., and George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation offers a range of compelling residential, hands-on, interdisciplinary programs in conservation biology for undergraduate and graduate students and professionals. This program focuses on building conservation-related skills and professional development opportunities for individuals interested in becoming conservation professionals.

Responsibilities: The incumbent is responsible for managing the recruitment and outreach activities related to SMSC’s undergraduate and graduate professional academic programs. Responsibilities include: * Working with the SMSC Executive Director on strategic planning and delivery of enrollment and recruitment initiatives; * Implementing a customer service plan to actively engage qualified prospective students, with the goal of moving them through the recruitment and enrollment funnel in a timely fashion; * Working closely with the Admissions team to develop, implement and coordinate all recruitment events; * Serving as the main point of contact for potential students; * Corresponding promptly and professionally with prospective students in-person, by phone and electronically; * Proactively contacting applicants at specific points during the recruitment cycle to answer questions and offer assistance; * Developing relationships with prospective students through effective communication, with a goal of having prospective students attend individual appointments or information sessions; and * Developing and implementing strategies to optimize student yield from admit to deposit to matriculation.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for creation of marketing and Web site content, working with George Mason University and Smithsonian partners and external vendors to produce plans and content.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience; * Demonstrated experience working in an educational setting (e.g., high school, community college, university) performing recruiting and outreach activities; * Ability to travel for recruitment events and/or be eligible to use a state vehicle upon hire; * Excellent knowledge of basic computer applications and equipment; * Demonstrated strong customer-oriented/service-oriented approach, interpersonal skills, public relations skills, and the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals (e.g., prospective students, faculty, alumni, staff and current students); * Effective organizational, planning and time management skills with strong attention to detail; * Ability to multitask and problem-solve innovatively, strategically prioritizing resources and tasks; * Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal; * Strong public speaking skills, both in-person and via Web-based tools (e.g., Skype, GoToMeeting); * Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team-based environment; * Ability to take initiative and complete projects and/or assignments independently; * Willingness to work evening and weekend hours as needed to support various recruitment and outreach activities; and * Successful completion of standard and special agency federal background check.
