This is a non-sworn, uniformed position within the Police Department responsible for enforcing parking regulations, providing vehicle and pedestrian traffic control at incidents, special events and school crossings, and for providing information and assistance to members of the public.
 Public Service Aides are active contributors to the Police Department's mission of reducing crime and improving the quality of life by creating an environment where all people may live safely and without fear. Public Service Aides are highly visible representatives of County Government and the Police Department and promote safety, security and competence through their active presence in the community.
Specific duties include:
  • Issuing electronic parking tickets accurately for vehicles violating parking laws;
  • Preparing notices for vehicles violating County license plate ordinances;
  • Impounding and releasing vehicles which have been impounded by the Police Department;
  • Applying and removing parking boots;
  • Deploying traffic cones along roadways;
  • Placing portable traffic signs in designated areas;
  • Reporting parking meters that need repair;
  • Providing information to citizens; and
  • Reporting traffic hazards or violators to the Police Department.

Accurate data entry of parking ticket information is important to success in this position since much of the job involves issuing electronic tickets and notices; inaccurate ticket entries can result in significant inconvenience to the citizen and additional administrative work to rectify the error.  Employee must have good written and oral communication skills in order to complete forms and/or reports and to interact with citizens to provide directions or information on parking restrictions and County or State licensing requirements.
Work involves: a great amount of walking (several miles per day); operation of motor vehicles, Segways and bicycles; bending and lifting parking boots (35 pounds); carrying, lifting and loading stacks of traffic cones and barricades (40 lbs. per stack) from the bed of a standard sized pick- up truck and rapidly deploying them along the roadway and working outdoors in all types of weather for extended periods of time to include heavy rain, extreme heat and extreme cold.
 Selection Criteria: Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. 
Desirable:a) Experience interacting with the public in stressful or confrontational situations; and/orb) Experience explaining rules and procedures and convincing others to comply.

 The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. Applicant's privilege to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Virginia must not be suspended or revoked at the time of appointment. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain (or upon request the applicant must provide) a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. Background Check: A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A pre-employment polygraph examination is required for this position.

Employee is based at 1425 North Courthouse Road, however, job duties are performed at various locations throughout Arlington County.
 With satisfactory performance, including attaining a pre-determined skill level and certification by the supervisor, employees are eligible for consideration for movement from the Public Service Aide I to the Public Service Aide II class 18 months after hire. This recruitment will be used to develop an eligible list in order to fill multiple vacancies.
