Sentara Healthcare is currently recruiting for a Division Chief Operating Officer for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH), in Norfolk, VA.


The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the operational, financial and administrative performance of the Division. In this role, the COO will: Demonstrate leadership to drive operational excellence throughout the organization. Develop and execute strategic, marketing, and financial plans, integrate new services/products, business systems, regulatory and compliance programs. Develop excellent relationships will all employees, including physicians, staff, the executive team, and the Medical Staff Officers, and members of other divisions of Sentara Healthcare. Focus on employee recruitment and retention while achieving excellent work environment index and organizational climate scores. Develop, and modify as necessary, a business development plan to include organic market growth, as well as innovative opportunities in new healthcare clinical services. Develop and monitor organizational policy and practices in concert with other management personnel. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a regional academic medical center and primary teaching affiliate to Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) that includes 600 medical students, 400 ACGME approved residencies and fellowships and 500 higher education Master's degree candidate students in various health sciences fields. The COO will assure compliance with LCME, ACGME and CMS conditions of participation and accreditation criteria for higher education and graduate medical education approved residencies and fellowships as well as work in collaboration with EVMS to develop and implement clinical programs to support our community need and regional growth goals.

This position provides leadership as it relates to planning; policy development; improvement of patient care delivery models; efficiency of multiple service lines; organization of hospital functions; assessment and evaluation of operational effectiveness; and responsibility for all outpatient services to include 36 offsite hospital provider based locations and qualified pharmaceutical 340B IV Infusion centers (directly or through matrix reporting relationships). This role initiates, or participates, in development of marketing plans/strategies for both the hospital and system, and ensures the provision of high quality services attracting both physicians and patients. Oversees the development/monitoring of current/projected capital and operating budgets to include initiating corrective action(s) when substandard financial performance occurs. Ensures maximization of efforts around cost control related to patient care through continuous evaluation of resource allocation(s). Achieves, or exceeds, hospital financial plans.

Ensures hospital facilities allow for the implementation of programs and services. Recommends facility/product line improvement(s), to include construction and/or renovation of structures and/or purchase of new equipment as appropriate. Maintains liaison relationships between hospital management/medical staff and other healthcare related organizations in order to foster cooperative relationships and establish control systems for the most effective operation of Sentara Healthcare. Represents Sentara to community, state, and national health agencies and groups. Works to communicate and reinforce a vision for the hospital that emphasizes strong and effective physician relationships, the creation of new business opportunities, ensure dedication to customers, responsiveness to healthcare reform and changing reimbursement patterns. Communicates openly and effectively internally and externally with a wide variety of individuals to ensure that needs are being met, and the reputation of the company is enhanced, while maintaining strict confidentiality. Qualified candidates will possess a demonstrated track record of leadership/executive skills and knowledge/strength related to human resources, communication, and effective interaction with employees/physicians/peers.

Education Level
Master's degree required. MBA, MHA and/or MPH strongly preferred.

Experience
• Healthcare Law
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive hospital or healthcare related operations experience in leadership/administration. 8 years is strongly preferred.
• Quantitative Analysis

• Knowledge of quality assurance and cost containment programs, governmental regulations, professional licensing and liability principles, medical group and practice management functions, organization and operations.
