The Office of Communications is responsible for programs and activities designed to expand the culture of the institution to embrace significant interaction with individuals and publics beyond those in our traditional focus.  Our work is keyed to enhancing audience focus, increasing the dissemination of derivative and alternative products, to creating communications capacity throughout the institution, and to developing brand recognition.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Communications Associate will assist in the outreach and communication of activities and products related to the work of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.  Additional essential job duties include the following:

 

Collaborates with staff to identify target audiences for project and activities and appropriate vehicles for reaching those audiences.  An example of this work is promoting the “What You Need to Know About X” websites with the topics currently being energy and infectious disease.  Assists with and participates in the conception and production of special events including an event focused on the science of science communication.  Works with senior staff on facilitating visual communication across the institution by researching and circulating a “visual of the week” and working with program staff members on visualization projects.  Arranging travel and submitting expense reports are also part of the responsibilities of this position. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to operate with appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to solve problems of some variety and complexity. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to develop effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other National Academies’ departments, and external customers. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
