The Washington DC VA Medical Center is a tertiary care medical center and an active teaching facility for the Washington, DC area medical schools.

  • Basic Requirements:

    · Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.).

    · Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.  Approved schools are:

    (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or

    (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

    (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

    · Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

    · Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:

    (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

    (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. 

    · English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

    Preferred Experience:

    • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neurology
    • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Pain Medicine
    • Training and experience in Pain Medicine

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.  

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard.  This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements:   Moderate lifting and Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Walking and Standing, 1 hour; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Hearing aid permitted; Both hands required; Working closely with others; and Working alone.  All applicants must be physically and mentally stable to perform efficiently the duties of the position.

    DUTIES:

    Neurology Service, at the Washington DC VA Medical Center seeks a Full-Time, Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neurology with special interest in Pain Management.  The ideal candidate will also have training and experience in Pain Medicine and be Board Certified/Board Eligibile in Pain Medicine. 

    Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    ·Working independently, caring for outpatients in clinics;

    ·Working collaboratively with other members of an interdisciplinary Pain Management team within the Neurology department, and other colleagues and inter-professional teams;

    ·Working closely with team members in the development of an Interdisciplinary Pain Rehabilitation program with national rehabilitation certification;

    · Participating in the general Neurology clinic, and the inpatient Neurologist including ward services;

    ·Engaging in the teaching and supervision of neurology residents and medical students;

    ·Partaking in pain telehealth aspects, including telehealth individual and group visits. 

    ·Performing all other related duties as assigned.

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.  Night, weekend, and holiday call is required in rotation with neurology attendings.
