The Genomics Department in the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) of the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) has a mission to apply bioinformatics and cutting edge, high-throughput technologies such as genotypic and phenotypic

expression profiling, biomarker characterization, bacteriophage science, etc. to the study of infectious diseases, biodefense, and enhanced global disease surveillance for early pathogen detection and response. We are seeking a Bioinformatics Researcher with the following experience:

 

1) Five years of hands-on experience in Bioinformatics.

2) Strong background in Computer Science, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

3) Programming skills in languages such as JAVA, PERL, PYTHON, and statistical software such as R.

4) Familiarity with next generation sequencing and related platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq500, Ion Torrent, 454, Optical Mapping, as well as microarrays.

5) Must be willing to travel internationally to potentially austere environments.

6) Must have excellent verbal and writing communication skills.

7) Must be able to think independently and must have excellent problem-solving skills.

8) Must be able to perform under deadlines in austere environments.

Education 1. Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline.

 2. Masters Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science (combined with experience and education in biology or bioinformatics), Computational Biology, or closely related area is highly preferred.

Qualifications 5-8 years of related experience in scientific research, analysis and/or engineering.
