The contractor shall provide a subject matter expert to establish a state of the art; multimillion dollar preclinical/translational Imaging facility at USAMRIID to support medical countermeasure development efforts. Preclinical imagining capabilities will include MRI; PET; and SPECT/CT modalities.

 Specific Tasks:
  • Assist in the evaluation; selection; implementation; and operation of instruments designed to support the various preclinical/translational imaging modalities. Define and establish a strategy and direction of research for preclinical imaging.
  • Assist the USAMRIID Transition team in the planning and acquisition of equipment to support preclinical imaging in the new USAMRIID. Review laboratory space and facility designs to ensure current and future facility infrastructure can support imaging capabilities. This includes potential extension for one or more testing modalities into Biological Safety level 3 or 4 laboratories. Ensure that the IT infrastructure can support data capture and analysis in the new USAMRIID.
  • Assemble multidisciplinary teams to support development and application of preclinical imaging biomarkers to drug discovery and infectious disease research. Help define strategic goals for successful translation of preclinical data to support future clinical applications. Coordinate activities and ensure effective interaction between Imaging staff and other internal and external collaborative partners.
  • Serve as the Institute SME for preclinical/translational imaging applications. Provide guidance and assist Principal investigators and other researchers in designing studies and applying imaging capabilities to support medical countermeasure development. Coordinate imaging studies across multiple modalities when multimodality imaging required. Coordinate image analysis support for development and optimization of image analysis methods.
  • Actively seek to integrate imaging capabilities into current JSTO and MCS funded programs. Look for and apply direct funding support from DoD funding sources as well as non-DoD funding sources. Seek external collaborations both within and outside of the Institute to leverage imaging capabilities for other programs. Work with the senior Institute research personnel; Division leadership; and the Scientific Director to develop innovative research proposals to seek funding for research aimed at application of in vivo imaging to the discovery of countermeasures to BSL3/4 pathogens.
  • As the lead Senior Research Scientist for the Imaging facility; the SME will be expected to present work at 1-2 Scientific Meetings per year. Also; this position will require travel to support collaborative efforts with pharmaceutical; academic; and external partners. This requirement is anticipated to comprise 2 trips per year.
