The Contractor shall provide a Subject Metter Expert to serve as a Principal Investigator and lead Technical Point of Contact (TPOC) for the Translational Imaging Center. This position is specialized and technically demanding; requiring knowledge of several preclinical imaging modalities including micro Positron Emission Tomography (microPET); single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT); and computed tomography (CT).

 Specific Tasks:
  • Function as the lead Principal Investigator for Translational Imaging focused on applying microPET/SPECT/CT to evaluate countermeasures against BSL 2/3/4 viral and bacterial pathogens. Oversee the daily operation of the Siemens Trimodal Inveon PET/SPECT/CT scanner. Apply expertise in operating a Siemens Inveon PET/SPECT/CT scanner and inviCRO image analysis software to support MCM development. This includes ensuring that all operations meet safety standards for radioisotope work and are in compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct PET/SPECT/CT imaging studies in animal models including mice; rats; primates or other animal models as necessary. PET/SPECT/CT imaging experiments include running the instrument from within BSL2 and coordinating animal handling by USAMRIID technical veterinary experts who will be within BSL3/4. This includes drafting supporting animal protocols. Maintain image data archival on an inviCRO iPACs system. Coordinate and schedule imaging studies with outside vendors of radiotracers; internal PET radiochemistry; collaborators and USAMRIID Veterinary Staff.
  • Perform PET/SPECT/CT image data analysis with established methods; perform summarization of results for report generation and publication. Assist in the designing of appropriate in vivo experiments to accurately plan imaging studies; capture and analyze resultant data; and report findings based on customer need.
  • Collaborate with MRI team members to integrate PET/SPECT/CT with MRI image analysis when multimodality imaging is required. Coordinate with PET radiochemists for synthesis and delivery of radioisotope tracers for use in image studies.
  • Work with the department head to develop innovative research proposals to seek funding for research aimed at application of in vivo imaging to the discovery of countermeasures to BSL3/4 pathogens. Funding partners include the DTRA; MCS; and JSTO.
  • As the lead PI for the Imaging facility; the SME will be expected to prepare technical reports and manuscripts for publishing each year. They should present work at 1-2 Scientific Meetings per year.
  • Masters Degree in a scientific discipline.
  • PhD in a relevant field of the life sciences (virology; bacteriology; immunology; molecular biology; pharmacology) is highly desired.
  • 10+ years of directly related work experience and a recognized as an expert in the required area of expertise
