The Genomics Department in the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) of the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) has a mission to apply bioinformatics and cutting edge, high-throughput technologies such as genotypic and phenotypic expression profiling, biomarker characterization, bacteriophage science, etc. to the study of infectious diseases, biodefense, and enhanced global disease surveillance for early pathogen detection and response. We are seekeing an individual with the following experience:

 

1) The incumbent must possess a practical knowledge of basic and applied research, including experimental design and methods, and must have demonstrated the ability to perform original and competent research.

 

2) He/she must have demonstrated the ability to manage a research program, including training of other scientists, technicians, and support personnel; and management of necessary resources including budget, supplies, equipment and facilities.

 

3) The incumbent should have 7 years of deep experience in bacterial and viral genomics, microbiology, virology, and bacteriology, the practice of bioinformatics, and the development of bioinformatics platforms and software development.

 

4) The incumbent must have experience working on methods for the detection of biological weapons.

 

5) He/she must have extensive knowledge of Apple OSX environments, UNIX environments, PERL programming language, various genome assembly software packages, and shell scripting.

Education Masters Degree in a scientific discipline.

 

PhD in virology, microbiology, molecular biology, emerging infectious diseases, or biochemistry highly desired.

 

Post-Doctoral research in virology and bacteriology is preferred.

 

 

 

Qualifications 10-15 years of related experience in scientific research, analysis and/or engineering.

 

Must be able to pass all criteria for a Secret security clearance.
