The National Academies Press (NAP) is the publisher for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (The National Academies). NAP publishes more than 200 book-length works each year, and has the dual mission of disseminating the works of the National Academies as widely as possible while sustaining the entire cost of its operation through the revenues generated by book sales and fees for services performed for customers both inside and outside the institution. Publishing services of almost any kind can be performed by NAP. We handle all report production from unedited files to final published books. In addition, we handle services from printing business cards and stationery to the creation of complex graphics to the procurement of copyediting services to the development and printing of brochures, newsletters, and other promotional materials and mailings. All these services are billed back to the program units at cost.




Designs electronic and printed materials, exhibit elements, and/or illustrations for a variety of National Academies’ publications, displays, and other media.  Meets with teams and individuals to plan projects, methods, and strategies.  Completes assignments that are complex in nature and require creativity in their execution. 


Working under general supervision, incumbent works within general style and format guidelines and typically has considerable discretion over individual page design and layout.  Incumbent proceeds on own initiative in compliance with policies, procedures, and practices, but receives guidance or expertise from manager or Art Director when needed.  May lead and provide work guidance to lower level support employees.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge or experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator on Macintosh and/or PC platforms. Knowledge or experience in HTML, and CSS. Knowledge of both web design and the printing process. Ability to solve intellectual problems through selection and application of commonly used rules, procedures, and precedents. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Good verbal communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with most levels of employees.
