Job Title: TAX ASSESSOR II Closing Date/Time: Thu. 03/30/17 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $19.50 - $29.80 Hourly

Job Type: Full-Time Location: 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 200, Arlington, Virginia, Virginia       This employee serves as the senior Tax Assessor in the Vehicle Personal Property Tax Division of the Commissioner of the Revenue and provides technical advice and guidance to other assessors and taxpayers in the resolution of tax issues in the areas of personal property tax.

Duties include:
  • Working with vehicle information software systems for valuation and vehicle manufacturer information in regards to vehicle model and trim specifications;
  • Counseling taxpayers and other staff regarding the interpretation and application of various taxes;
  • Educating taxpayers about tax laws/codes and individual's assessment;
  • Preparing and balancing reports of adjusted accounts to be approved by the Commissioner of the Revenue;
  • Conducting in-depth research regarding complex tax issues; determining liability, reviewing state records, resolving complaints, following-up with taxpayers concerning case resolution;
  • Monitoring the flow of taxpayers at the counter and on the phones;
  • Auditing and verifying tax returns which are filed with the office for routine and specialized tax programs;
  • Interviewing taxpayers to obtain tax information;
  • Conducting special projects requiring research and interpretation of specialized tax manuals and other documents; and
  • Researching and retrieving tax data from internal and other jurisdictions automated data systems.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum Qualifications:  High school or vocational school, GED certificate, or the equivalent, PLUS three years of experience in the application of federal, state and local tax laws or codes and public service experience that included high client volume and the use of automated systems to update, research, retrieve and/or download information from databases.

Substitution:   Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.

Desirables:  Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Working with vehicle title handling and processing;
  • Examining vehicle VIN information, and vehicle registration information;
  • Conducting research or investigation on tax issues;
  • Coursework in taxation, accounting, or related and Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel); and/or
  • Analyzing financial data.

 Special Requirements: Must be available to work during the tax deadline season (August 14th through November 14th). The Office of the Commissioner of Revenue reserves the right to change these dates.
