Associate Director, Academic Resource Center - Division of Student Affairs

Georgetown University seeks an Associate Director to work within the Academic Resource Center (ARC), an office in the Division of Student Affairs. The mission of Student Affairs contributes to the establishment of a student-centered learning community that fosters educational and personal development and is dedicated to the Catholic and Jesuit tradition of care for self and others. Student Affairs in partnership with other University efforts fulfills this mission by: Educating students as whole persons, promoting their intellectual, moral, spiritual, and social development; Enhancing students' learning and helping to prepare them for lives of discernment, civic engagement, and professional growth; Teaching personal responsibility and respect for people of all faiths, cultures, and beliefs; Promoting the health and safety of students and others in the University community; Providing service to those in need, both within the University and in the District of Columbia.

Reporting to the Director of the ARC, the Associate Director supports the needs of students with disabilities by reviewing medical documentation to determine reasonable accommodations. The incumbent must be well-versed in understanding and applying the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in determining accommodations that afford equity and access to programs, services and facilities. Furthermore, the Associate Director serves in an educational capacity by working with students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders to ensure that the needs of students with disabilities are being addressed in accordance with established guidelines and protocol. The Associate Director plays an important role in promoting the mission and goals of the Academic Resource Center. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Determines reasonable accommodations for students with physical disabilities or chronic health conditions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and prescribed University policies and practices.
  • Represents the ARC as an advocacy office for students with disabilities by participating in training and educational forums, i.e. New Student Orientation, Residence Life training for professional staff and resident advisors, etc.
  • Facilitates and promote career opportunities, in conjunction with the Cawley Career Education Center, for students with disabilities.
  • Works with local agencies that provide interpreting/CART services for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing by determining fee for services and providing ongoing feedback regarding services.
  • Collaborates with the Department of Emergency Management and Operational Continuity (DEMOC) and Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) to determine best practices in advising students to handle possible evacuation during an emergency.
  • Provides assistance to faculty and staff in helping them to understand their role in the accommodation process.
  • Explains the medical housing process to students through individual consultations as part of an interactive process to determine appropriate housing needs.
  • Coordinates and determine medical housing requests in collaboration with the Office of Residential Living.
  • Knowledgeable in the areas of current disability issues that can impact revision and/or implementation of policy and protocol of documentation and accommodations.
  • Serves on University committees and represent the rights of people with disabilities and the need for accessible facilities, services, and programs.
  • Acts as a consultant for University partners who require guidance in the area of disability and accessibility.
  • Collaborates with University partners in conducting training efforts regarding accessibility/disability issues.
  • Assists in promoting disability issues through programs.
  • Provides back-up support, in the absence of the Coordinator of Administrative Services, ensuring implementation of accommodations.
  • Participates in the use and training of Clockwork.
  • Participates in training and supervision of student office workers.
  • Participates in ARC activities, (i.e. proctoring final exams, writing learning outcomes, etc.).
  • Provides support to fellow ARC staff members.

Requirements

\n\n
  • Master's degree is required in education, special education, or counseling
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with people with disabilities, preferably in higher education, and with culturally and academically diverse populations of students Must be able to multi-task
  • Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment
  • Prescribe and practice ethical behavior

Weekend and evening work will occasionally be required.
