Research Fellow, Bridge Initiative - Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (ACMCU) - School of Foreign Service

Georgetown's Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (ACMCU) was founded in 1993 by an agreement between the Foundation pour L'Entente entre Chretiens et Musulmans, Geneva and Georgetown University to build stronger bridges of understanding between the Muslim world and the West as well as between Islam and Christianity. The Center's mission is to improve relations between the Muslim world and the West and enhance understanding of Muslims in the West.

The Senior Research Fellow contributes substantive research and writing to the Bridge Initiative, an ACMCU-sponsored project that addresses pluralism, religious diversity, and Islamophobia research. Reporting to the ACMCU Associate Director and working closely with the faculty Director and faculty Associate Director for the Bridge Initiative on strategic direction and content, the Senior Research Fellow has duties that include but are not limited to


  • Conducts original academic research on the origins, machinations, funding sources, and networks of Islamophobia.
  • Applies a variety of research techniques to gather relevant information, including document analysis, surveys, case studies and interviews (face to face, telephone calls and online).
  • Develops and tests social theories.
  • Gathers information by directing or carrying out fieldwork.
  • Conducts literature searches.
  • Assists Senior Research Fellow in presenting and disseminating results, both verbally and in writing, to the Director and Associate Director.
  • Assists Senior Research Fellow in offering research-based briefings and advice, which may involve writing action plans.
  • Assists in commissioned surveys and polls that help team and public better understand the extent and impact of Islamophobia.
  • Conducts guided research on topics, themes, and other matters as assigned by Director and/or Associate Director.
  • Assists Senior Research Fellow in developing and presenting proposals for new annual research projects.
  • Researches potential Impact Groups and develops ideas for application of research outcomes.
  • Researches topics for inclusion in the online encyclopedia of Islamophobia.
  • Analyzes problem areas and challenges in research agenda and assists Senior Research Fellow in developing solutions.


  • Assists Senior Research Fellow in writing drafts of projects “Focus” reports.
  • Drafts research proposals, reports, and other similar research documents.
  • Assists Senior Research Fellow in writing and editing quarterly newsletter and position papers, and in producing and editing popular editorials and articles.
  • Drafts letters, memorandums, inquiries, and other necessary communications that relate to project's goals and objectives, and daily operation.
  • Assists in writing original commentary and opinion editorials that break down research findings to the average news consumer.
  • Assists in creating the nation's leading website on Islamophobia that would be an information clearing house on the research and finding of the center.
  • Assists in creating and maintaining and online Islamophobia Encyclopedia
  • Creates informational briefing packets for invited guests for meetings and workshops hosted by the project Director and staff.


  • Bachelor's degree in Islamic, Middle East, or Arab studies with emphasis on religious studies/pluralism
  • Preference for evidence of more than 1 substantive independent research effort in a relevant field; track record of research and writing on topic of Islamophobia
  • Ability to effectively use online and print resources for research purposes
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and social media - knowledge of the workings of the Organized Islamophobia Network (OIN) preferred
  • Knowledge of the Islamic world and familiarity with various Muslim cultures and traditions
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse domestic and international community 
  • Ability to take direction and effectively deliver results, and to operate as part of a dynamic and fast-paced team
