Network Engineer, Technical Lead


  • This is a full time position for an experienced Cisco certified CCNP LAN and VLAN engineer and manager who will lead and work within a team of on-site Network Engineers/Administrators

The ideal candidate will have excellent VLAN design and organization skills, Cisco installation / management experience, and proven capability to work within and lead a technical team

  • This is a hands-on engineer position
  • Conduct cross-training of all team duties amongst all team members
  • Prepare and coordinate project/task plans for network changes and document progress
  • The candidate will be required to provide management of VLAN connectivity documentation, as well as ensure that all switches are patched and standard approved configuration files are maintained. As the environment changes, he/she will contribute strategically to re-configuration and design. This team coordinates with Server Administration and WAN operations teams to avoid unintended interruptions of service
  • Function within a team of three (3) network engineers while leading the overall effort
  • Support Cisco VLAN environment
  • Work with the WRAIR information technology staff to ensure the network environment is consistent with the agency objectives and is compatible with existing applications and security requirements
  • Analyze and resolve network hardware, software, and communications problems using diagnostic software and/or technical troubleshooting processes
  • Provide Tier 1 through Tier 3 engineering support, advice, and consultation
  • Maintain system documentation
  • Consult with users and program management conducting information assessments to determine user needs and to define network solutions to meet user requirements
  • Conduct research concerning the development of network systems and related technologies
  • Coordinate and ensure the standard implementation of policies, procedures, and systems operations with support personnel
  • Write and/or maintain documentation for network software and operational procedures
  • Monitor hardware to ensure it is properly maintained
  • Coordinate with WRAIR management for the acquisition of and contracting for hardware, software, and information technology services (including maintenance)
  • Conduct on-going network system audits to evaluate the utility and efficiency of the system's hardware, software, and communications components and its effectiveness in meeting management information needs
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery procedures for the network and network resources
  • Perform related work as required

Requirements and Qualifications:

Experience: Must have experience managing a small team of network engineers
Must have provided 4 - 6 years of progressive Cisco support
Must have hands-on experience with Cisco router / switch security configurations
Must have excellent customer-focused problem and communication skills

Education: Must have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university or 6 - 8 years experience in Cisco WAN, LAN, VLAN network management and design in lieu the required college education

Technical Certification: Must have a current IAT Level II baseline certification per DoD 8570.01-M, CompTIA Security+ CE certification is the most prevalent (also GSEC, SSCP, CCNA-Security, CISA, GCIH, GCED, CISSP, or CASP CE)

Technical Certification: Must have a current Computing Environment (CE) per AR 25-2
CCNP required

Security Clearance: Must have an Active Secret Clearance

Other Desired Skills:

  • DoD - Preferably Army - client experience
  • 6 - 8 years of experience in WAN, LAN, VLAN network management and design
  • Experience with the following:
    • Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS)
    • Fortinet firewalls
    • Cisco wireless
    • Brocade routers/switches
    • DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs)
  • Experience creating detailed and complete system support documentation including instructional procedures, provisioning guidelines, test plans, problem documentation, and functional process flows
